Axis Lass is a fictional comic book based superhero created for the City of Heroes game franchise. The character made his first appearance on December 15th, 2007. Axis Lass's secret identity is Megan Duncan. Like her counterpart in our earth, Axis Lass follows a similar path but --due to her life on a parralel earth-- it is somewhat different. For example, on her earth the Americans were the version of our earth's nazi party and the Third Reich of Germany were the ones to free the world of their tyrany. More on Axis Lass, Reichman, and this parralel world can be read below.

Influences for this character include Ms. Liberty of the City of Heroes franchise and Fifth Column lore found in-game, as well as the player created character, Reichman.

Description

Axis Lass, born as Megan Duncan, she is the granddaughter of Reichman(aka Marcus Cole) and his now-deceased wife, Mother Germany, and the daughter of Mother Germany's successor Reichwoman.

She has taken up the fight to protect not just Paragon Capital but the world, as a figurehead of the Fifth Column and their paramilitary wing, known as Vector Crew. She is also heavily involved in the recruitment and training of heroes, and is usually the first stop on a novice hero's journey when they first arrive in Paragon Capital.

Axis Lass's "head cheerleader" stereotype is seen by her friends as having a slightly humorless and superior attitude, as well as an ambitious thirst to prove herself and step out of the shadow of her forebearers.

History

Megan Duncan is the granddaughter of Mother Germany and Reichman from the Golden Age and the daughter of Reichwoman. She has taken up the mantle to fight for unity, in this specific case to unify Paragon Capital against its infestation of villains. She has heightened strength and endurance as well as the power of the mythical sword, Joyeuse, which was passed on to her by her mother.

Early in her career Axis Lass worked extensively with Reichman, but recently seems to be spending more time working on making certain that new heroes in Paragon Capital have the information they need, as well as working on the Vector Crew. It is clear that she is determined to do her energetic best to make the Vector Crew the premier hero assistance group in Paragon Capital someday.

Axis Lass is Reichman's sidekick, but she also leads a group of heroes herself. They are called the Protectorates, and the group is composed of Mountain Lion, Norr, Sparrow, Inflamed, Luminus and most recently, Russian Dawn.

Reichwoman, Megan's mother, co-created the Fifth Column. Megan created a military division of the Fifth Column called Vector Crew. The sword Axis Lass carries is the fabled Joyeuse. Herald One entrusted it to Reichwoman while he journeyed to the Rikti homeworld with the rest of the Omega Team, and she passed it down to her daughter.

The American Empire and UPA:

UPA Flag.jpg

The nation of America was founded by thirteen colonies of Great Britain located along the Atlantic seaboard. Proclaiming themselves as "The Second Empire" they issued the Declaration of America on July 4, 1776.

In the nineteenth century, the American Empire acquired Canada, Mexico, Japan and Russia. The actions of the American Empire had become known in history as the First World War.

"The Second Empire" refers to America during the period from 1910 to 1945, when it was governed by the United Peoples of America (UPA), with Woodrow Wilson as chancellor from 1910 to 1927, then being usurped by Franklin D. Roosevelt as The Emperor from 1928 to 1945.

The policies pursued by UPA and the American Empire were based on the concept of "Aryan" racial purity and anti-Semitism. Also the UPA regime's systematic mass murder of millions of non christains, and political opponents, and other minorities in the genocide known as the Holocaust.

Under the UPA regime, The American Empire, from a military and territorial standpoint, became the dominant nation by the early 1940s. After the annexation of Austria in 1938, American Empire became the first empire since the Holy Roman Empire to include Austria within its boundaries, which was ended after the American Empire's defeat in 1945.

By the end of the war, the American Empire's major infrastructure was destroyed — and many of its major cities were in ruin as the result of Axis bombings and intense urban warfare (especially in Washington in 1945).

Allied Axis as the Third Empire:

Allied Axis Flag.jpg

Based in Paragon Capital, Berlin, Germany, the coaliation of the Axis forces would be come to be known as the "Third Reich"(Litteraly meaning Third Empire). Instead of being governed by one man or one party the Third Empire, or Allied Axis, was an international organization whose stated aims were to facilitate cooperation in international law, international security, economic development, social progress and human rights issues.

When the American Empire attacked the Axis Allies in 1941 it sparked the begining of what would become the downfall of the American Empire and the start of World War two.

Fifth Column of Axis Earth (Epsilon Zeta 65-9):

The Fifth Column of Axis Earth was founded on July 4, 1932. The founding members included (in order of their appearances in Paragon Capital) Reichman, the Light Holder, Elementro, the team known as Sigma and Mother Germany. The name was suggested by James St. John-Smythe (the tech and wheel-chair bound member of the two man team Sigma Tau) and was quickly ratified by the others.

The group faced its first official combat on the date of Monday, July 11, 1932. This date is otherwise known as "Brass Monday".

In the 1930s, the Reichman became one of the first established heroes in Paragon Capital. Inspired by his example, other heroes soon emerged as well, including the Light Holder, the Sand Wizard, and Mother Germany. Although each individual hero made some headway against Paragon Capital's criminal element, they also faced increasingly more dangerous and organized villains. The Reichman soon recognized the need to rally the other heroes into a coordinated fighting force.

In the spring of 1931, the Reichman gathered Paragon Capital's other heroes in his downtown apartment. There he issued his fellow heroes a challenge: to make a difference, not only on the streets and in the city, but also around the world. Thus was formed the first worldwide hero organization; dedicated to fighting evil, injustice and tyranny wherever they might hide.

The Reichman, inspired by the shoulder-to-shoulder discipline showed by ancient Greek soldiers in the face of Persian tyranny, called his new team of heroes the Fifth Column. Throughout the 1930's the Column fought the good fight and cleaned up Paragon Capital. The city council and mayoral elections of 1936 swept a platform of pro-hero candidates that resulted in the passage of the Heroes of Germany Act of 1937. This law made it legal for vigilantes to bring criminals to justice as long as they followed the same restrictions police officers used. Thus in the space of just five years, the Fifth Column went from an ad hoc band of would-be heroes to a legally recognized, nationally praised crime fighting organization.

Despite any public or political pressure, the Fifth Column continues to battle any threat to humankind and remains as the world’s premiere independent hero organization. They still make it a firm policy to have no official ties to any government or law enforcement institution. They are one of the most open organizations in existence, allowing any would-be hero to volunteer for service with the esteemed group. Unlike other groups, the Fifth Column is entirely open about everything, from its membership to its funding and current activities. This frankness carries through on down to the lowest levels, where even beginning heroes must reveal their true identities and pasts to the organization and the world. Reichman takes great pride in these 'sunshine' policies', saying they go a long way towards inspiring confidence in the Fifth Column's personnel and motives.

Freedom Lords of Axis Earth (Epsilon Zeta 65-9):

Built upon the notion that only the fittest should survive, the Freedom Lords was formed in the early part of the 20th Century in former American Empire ruled Canada. Although the true history of the Freedom Lords remains shrouded, this organization was around long before “Il Steatoda” wrested power away from its original founder, “The Spinner”. It remains unclear exactly how Lord Steatoda took over the global network of the Freedom Lords though betrayal and murder surely played a role. After taking over, Steatoda subtly shifted the Freedom Lords’s priorities and interests to better suit his own ideological goals.

After ruling the Freedom Lords for many years, Steatoda went underground to weave his web of deceit before eventually emerging as the “legitimate” leader of the Carriban Isles. Now he controls the Isles and is, technically at least, considered a political figure—though he privately relishes the rare times he’s able to get blood on his hands. Ruling a nation has allowed Lord Steatoda to create armed forces, purchase military hardware, and even research alien technology. Covertly, his agents have spread throughout the world, he has spies or contacts in every major “villain group,” and Paragon Capital is the juicy fly wiggling at the fringe of his growing web. Steatoda will not rest until he has wrested the City of Heroes from Reichman’s grasp.

While the Freedom Lords will ignore minor infractions, major crimes draw immediate action. In the eyes of Lord Steatoda, anyone reckless enough to commit murder, grand larceny, or acts of mass destruction is either uncontrollable or powerful enough that he wants to control them directly. Woe to the Freedom Lord that crosses the line far enough to bring the dreaded Freedom Keepers into the matter.

Outside the extensive military organization, every island has a civilian Governor and a military Marshal. The Governor decides the island’s domestic affairs while the Marshal rules all matters of security and defense. In a dispute, the Marshal has seniority. Both are appointed directly by Lord Steatoda. Failure is not tolerated, and turnover is quite high, particularly among the Governors.

Today Lord Steatoda is a tyrant, ruling all of the remaining Freedom Lords in order to maintain tight control over the Carribean Isles. As he protects his territory from the meddling of Vector Crew and other do-gooders from Paragon Capital, Steatoda also prides himself in being one step ahead of Reichman and the Fifth Column as he continues to weave his intricate web.

Journey from Axis Earth to our dimension:

After receiving a distress call from a facility in France, Reichman led some of the members from the Fifth Column to investigate the matter. The teammates included Reichwoman's daughter Axis Lass and 2 others. Upon arriving at the facility Reichman and his 3 teammates were met by Lord Steatoda and a large group of his generals from the Freedom Lords. Among them wer his most powerful allies Black Chimera, Spectre, Sphinx, and Megatooth.

In a feat of heroism, or blind luck, Reichman called out for his allies to charge and arrest these villains and in the ensuing battle they managed to beat down all but Lord Steatoda himself. Ordered to watch over the remaining Freedom Lords until transportation arrangements to a superpowers prison could be made, Reichman left his Fifth Column allies to pursue Steatoda in hopes of ending his reign of terror once and for all.

Chasing the villain into a deeper part of the facility, Reichman finally caught up with Steatoda. Unfortunately, as Lord Steatoda would explain, it was a trap. A Portal burst into creation behind Reichman, before he knew what had happened Steatoda slammed into the hero.

Arriving too late Axis Lass leaped into the portal a few seconds after her grandfather. The next thing Axis saw was the Atlas Statue in our Paragon City. She was greeted by a startled Reichman upon arrival some 2 days later. It was explained to the heroes that due to the unstable nature of the portal that some time lag was expected. Perhaps in time other heroes from Axis Earth will come in search of their lost comrades.

Fifth Column of our Earth:

Before they were taken over by the Council, The Fifth Column stood as the last remaining threat from World War II, a group of super powered fascists still fighting a war the rest of the world left behind fifty years ago. The Fifth Column has the nefarious distinction of actually triggering the United States' involvement in the war against Nazi Germany. Hitler first sent the covert super team to Paragon City in 1939, tasked with spying on and sabotaging US shipping and naval development.

In 1941, as the navy's Atlantic Fleet mustered in Paragon Harbor with a convoy of supply vessels destined for England, the Fifth Column struck. The attack force destroyed dozens of ships and injured thousands before they withdrew into hiding. The Nazi spies spent the rest of the war wreaking havoc up and down the Eastern seaboard, fighting countless skirmishes with America's own heroes. Under the leadership of the ruthless and deadly Requiem, the Fifth Column killed hundreds and cost the US millions in war materials. In the closing months of the war they became desperate and careless, and heroes like The Statesman brought most of the covert cadre to justice.

Under the leadership of its founder and former leader Requiem, they spent the next several decades building its resources and power base. There is some evidence that the group helped incite social discord and fostered criminal groups across the country. These activities provided the Fifth Column with a continual supply of new recruits and funds for research.

It is only in the months after the end of the Rikti Invasion, that the Fifth Column resurfaced. An individual claiming the name and authority of the war criminal Requiem appeared to be in charge and may in fact be the same person who originally led the group. He has declared all out war on the United States and Paragon City in particular. The group operates out of underground bases and safe houses secreted throughout the city. Thus far, attacks have generally been aimed at frightening the population and disrupting the city's infrastructure. Captured Fifth Column soldiers have revealed little about their organization's plans except that Requiem has only begun to unfold his intentions for the city.

Current rumors are circulating that the 5th Column will rise again. Even if this was true, under whose leadership will it be?

Freedom Phalanx of our Earth:

The Freedom Phalanx was founded on July 4, 1932. The founding members included (in order of their appearances in Paragon City) Statesman, the Dark Watcher, Elementar, the team known as Vambrace and Maiden Justice. The name was suggested by James St. John-Smythe (the tech and wheel-chair bound member of the two man team Vambrace) and was quickly ratified by the others.

In the 1930s, the Statesman became one of the first established heroes in Paragon City. Skills and abilities

Although she does not have quite the godlike power of her grandfather, Axis Lass's lineage gives her fearsome strength and resistance to damage. Her powers are amplified by the mystical sword passed down through her mother's side of the family, and she is expert in several forms of sword arts.

Sword and Dagger

Joyeuse1.jpg

Joyeuse was the name of Charlemagne's personal sword. The name translates as "joyful." Legends claim that it was forged with the Lance of Longinus within its pommel. Originally held by Herald One, Joyeise was given to to Reichwoman while he journeyed to the Rikti homeworld with the rest of the Omega Team, and she passed it down to her daughter Axis Lass.

After recieving extensive training in sword techniques and fencing, Axis Lass was gifted with a dagger to complement her mythical sword. She weilds the two blades with the profiency of a master fencer adn is not to be taken lightly in any battle.

Alternate versions

240px-MsLiberty.jpg

The most notable Alternate versions of Axis Lass include Ms. Liberty from our earth, as well as her evil counterpart, Dominatrix.

There appears to be no evil counterpart to Axis Lass on the parallel world where Statesman's evil doppleganger, Reichsman, is from. Reichsman kept the training of the Amerika Corps lax to avoid potential rivals to his power.

250px-Dominatrix.jpg

The evil counterpart to Axis Lass and Ms. Liberty is yet another alternate dimension version called Dominatrix, who is part of a group known as the Praetorians. This version of the Freedom Phalanx is every bit the equal of the primary versions of the characters seen within the game. Issue 16 of the Top Cow comic book based on the game insinuates that Tyrant's relationship with Dominatrix, his granddaughter (and the counterpart therefor of Ms. Liberty), may have been incestuous.
