Early Life

Spoiler warning: Details about a player-created storyline, or information currently unrevealed about a character, follow.

Mercy was born in London, but never knew her biological parents. She was given up for adoption shortly after she was born, eventually being taken in by Steven and Abigail Blake. They were good, caring parents who raised Mercy well. Mercy was a bit of an social outcast going through school. Her thick glasses, ponytail, and bad fashion sense ensured she would never be the Homecoming Queen. Still there was a beautiful girl hidden under her geeky visage, even if nobody would ever see it. Mercy did prove to be exceptionally bright, and with little social activity to distract her, remained an honor student throughout her days in school. She continued to excell at her studies, but her life as a normal child and student would be cut tragically short.

Bittersweet Sixteen

It was only a week after Mercy celebrated her "sweet sixteen" that her unknown mutation developed. Her parents heard screaming coming from her room and rushed to her side. Mercy was on the floor curled up in pain. She told her parents that her entire body hurt. Her parents took her from doctor to dorctor, but none of them could provide answers or relief for the young girl. Unable to find answers, and desperate to help their daughters suffering, they brought her to the "Research Institute of Science" located in the Rogue Isles. The head of the facility was Dr. Herbert Vallard, a world reknown scientist and doctor.

Mercy was brought to the Institute, where she was kept so they could run tests to find the problem. Dr. Vallard handled her case personally, and soon discovered that Mercy was a Mutant. Mercy's body was literally fueled by pain, so in order to survive, her body and mutation created that pain so her body could function. During one test, the Doctor blocked all the pain receptors in Mercy's body, granting her a temporary cure. Her body quickly began to shut down without the pain to "fuel" her. Dr. Vallard did become curious as to what would happen if he "added" fuel to her system, and how her body would respond. This proved to be a curiosity with dire concequences.

Innocence Turned Black

Unknown to the world at large, Dr. Herbert Vallard had another persona within the Rogue Isles. He was also known as the evil costumed genius, "Professor Mayhem". After Mercy's diagnosis, Dr. Vallard decided that Mercy would be too facinating of a test subject to pass up. The start of his plan came in two parts. First, "Professor Mayhem" hired two thugs to kill Mercy's foster parents in a "random" mugging. Given the crime rate in the Isles, and the lack of real law enforcement, the investigation into thier deaths was short. Secondly, as the highly respected Dr. Vallard, he convinced the courts that given Mercy's special circumstances she should remain at the institute. The Institute was granted custody of the young girl so her treatment could be completed.

Once that was done, Mercy was all his. He began horrible experiments on her, inflicting greater pain on her to see how her mutation would react. The Doctor's initial speculation did prove to be correct. The more pain that was induced, the greater her strength, speed, agility, and other physical traits became. The excess pain was "supercharging" her, and Dr. Vallard was determined to push the boundaries of her abilities.

During one such experiment, Mercy was strapped to a chair as Dr. Vallard ran voltage through her and watched her abilities increase. It was during this experiment that her abilities suddenly spiked. Her eyes turned solid black, and she broke free from her restraints. The small 16 year old girl took down a 280lb orderly before the spike in her power subsided. Dr. Vallard realized Mercy's potential threat, and had her placed in solitary confinement. This was the first time she was referred to as "Black" Mercy.

3 years of experimentation and pain passed. It was around this time that a nearby fight between another "inmate" and the guards taught Mercy something new about her ability. Not only was she fueled by her own pain, but she also absorbed the pain from everyone around her. Though she had tried twice before to escape, they were both unsuccessful. Now however, Mercy had a new weapon at her disposal.

At the next opportunity, Mercy broke away from the orderly escorting her. Instead of trying to get to the exit, she opened all the cells on her floor starting a riot. As the orderlies put down the inmates to regain order, Mercy absorbed all thier combined pain. This most likely would have killed her if Dr. Vallard hadn't done such a good job of building her pain threshold over the last three years. Fully fueled and powered, Mercy ripped through the orderlies with ease. She was only yards from the entrance when a huge shock of voltage shot through the room putting down everyone. While Mercy's hightened pain tolerance allowed her to sustain the pain longer, she did eventually succumb.
