Affiliations

Chernozem has previously worked for, and/or been trained by, the following agencies: Glavnoje Razvedyvatel'noje Upravlenije (GRU), Komityet Gosudarstvennoy Bezopasnosti (KGB), Pervoye Glavnoye Upravleniye (PGU), Federalnaya Sluzhba Bezopasnosti (FSB), Sluzhba Vneshney Razvedki (SVR).

She is currently a member of her father’s Paragon based Super Group KGB Special Section 8.

Character History

Origins

First 15 years

Chosen in the womb, Chernozem was removed from her mother at birth by the Mutant Development Division of the GRU. She was fostered for 3 years and then removed to a training facility.

For the next 12 years she underwent significant physical and mental training as well as undergoing experiments to development additional latent abilities.

At 15 she was sent on her first assignment.

From Official Files: A note

Additional information I have been able to gather, but was unable to make copies of official documents:

Chernozem was allocated for the government before birth. From documents I’ve read I do not believe the mother was aware of this. Medical documents indicate an induced early labor and general anesthesia. The doctors were concerned about the result of this on the children, but were overridden by the official from the Mutant Development Division.

She was given to an operative and his wife for her first 3 years, after which she was placed in a training facility. She was trained for control of her natural ability to manipulate temperature and experimented on to develop a latent psychic gene. She was trained to use these gifts as weapons and to assist in interrogation.

Many of her assignments were assassinations or interrogation followed by death. It is my personal belief that she was able to perform these tasks due to the fact that most of the targets were not only enemies of the state, but also of the people.

Unbelievably, four assignments in her career have been classified as incomplete but partial successes. This generally means that the agent used their own judgment and did not carry out the assigned task, but was able to justify such to her superiors’ satisfaction. I’ve only known two people who have successfully done so and each of them only did so once…. Three of her four incomplete cases were Patriots.

Also, as far as I can tell, she has no name other than Chernozem.

Recent History

An Assignment

Ivan Petrov looked up from his desk to find one of his newer agents standing patiently before him. She had only been with his department for a year, but was easily one of his most dependable.

He took a moment to study her face before saying, “Ah, Chernozem. I have an assignment for you.”

She simply nodded as this was expected, but with a little dread as her assignments for other agencies tended not to be pleasant ones.

Noting that dread, Petrov was quick to explain. “It is a protection assignment, da? And courier as well. You are to deliver these files,” he handed her a USB drive, “to a Kohlstadt. He will put you in contact with one Yevgeniya Stepanova.”

Chernozem looked sharper at this, as she had heard the name in the hallways as an impossible target. One who would hide in plain sight like an arctic fox, slipped through nets just as easily, but could turn and snap like a wolf, laughing the whole time.

“Da.” Petrov saw her recognition. “The last agents I sent were perhaps a little too… enthusiastic.”

She made a note to herself to practice her facial discipline.

He continued, “You are to protect this person at all costs. We need her alive. Do not ask why.” Although he knew she would not. She was, perhaps, too well trained.

Handing her a stack of documents, he went on, “These are your plane tickets, new passport, and registration.”

Chernozem blinked softly at the last; flipping through the documents, noting her destination, temporary name and…

“Hero registration, ser tovarisch?”

“Da. You will need this in Paragon City. The local police will not trouble you as long as you carry it.”

She absorbed the information, then nodded understanding and acceptance.

Petrov took one last, long look at her, knowing they were unlikely to meet again.

“Good luck, comrade.”

She nodded sharply before turning to prepare for her assignment.

A Letter

Vic,

Having met Chernozem, I’m sure you have seen what I did. I have sent her to you on an “assignment” from which I do not expect her to return. She only knows that she was to deliver these files to you and to protect Yevgeniya.

She has a good heart, brother. She has been trained to do despicable things, but finds no joy in it. Her training has left her with a hard shell, but her heart is with the people. When given an assignment which benefits them she is as content as I have ever seen her. When ordered to do something she cannot justify as “good” she becomes as icy as her weapons.

Read the files and make your judgment. I believe I know what you will decide and my heart rejoices in it.

Ivan

Upon Arrival in Paragon

Chernozem learned, shortly after meeting with her contact, that Ivan had a third reason for sending her on this assignment. She is one of a pair of twins, with living family. Her twin, Yevgeniya Stepanova ((Winter Born)), and father, Yevgeny Korsakov ((Smersh)), are both active heroes in the city. And though her mother died in 1983, an alternate dimension version of Tatyana Stepanova ((Siberian Spring)) has also been recently found and is working with them.

Shortly after her arrival, Ivan listed her as a rogue agent, her access to information has been revoked, and she is hunted (although apparently not actively) by Russian government organizations.

Recent Recent History

RP Logs & Stories

Personality

Named Alisa, by her father, she is slowly learning what it means to have a family, for her father also has other daughters, and how to be independent of the Soviet/Russian government.

She is also allowing the restrictions she'd placed on herself to wane and is not quite as controlled. She is learning to laugh and to enjoy working with others. And, almost more importantly, she is learning to embrace the joys of family and friends.

Powers

Offensive

Ice Blast

The ability to create and project ice as a weapon is a natural in-born ability, inherited from her mother and shared by her twin sister.

Mental Manipulation

A latent empathic ability was found and triggered by the Mutant Development Division of the GRU. They trained Chernozem to use this ability in a purely offensive manner. When fighting solo against a single target or small group, she is quite effective and deadly. Against larger groups she finds the offensive mental work extremely taxing and suffers frequent headaches when fighting with large groups of allies.

Martial Arts

Standard training for all Soviet and Russian field agents includes hand-to-hand combat skills, regardless of other offensive talents they may have. Chernozem was one of their top field agents. ((‘nuff said))

Defensive

Empathy

Shortly after her arrival in Paragon, and introduction to her family, her young sister’s ((Eaglet)) healing empathic abilities led her to Antonio Nash and the Genetic Investigation and Facilitation Team in Atlas Park. After a small bit of testing, they found that while trained to use her gifts offensively, she also had the ability to use them to aid herself and her allies. She now actively practices with this new twist on her abilities, finding it much less taxing and more rewarding.

Regeneration

When practicing her hand-to-hand combat skills, she finds the close quarters combat requires her to focus greatly on her own healing and regeneration and, unfortunately, has less to offer her allies. However, she is able to defend them by keeping the attackers’ attention on herself... or just kicking the attacker out of the way.

Other

Teleportation and Hover

As a side effect of her mental training, Chernozem has the ability to bend space, very slightly. It would not be a noticeable effect except she has refined it to allow her to “relocate” herself and others to different sites and to lift herself slightly off the ground for short periods of time. She is, however, limited to a single person at one time, to line of sight, and expends a great deal of energy to do so.

Trivia

Likes whipped cream, shoes, and is a bit of a clothes horse.
