The Story of Dr. Discombobulation

The Younger Days

The dastardly villain known as Dr. Discombobulation was not always a megalomaniac tyrant. The doctor was born as Evan Donisthorpe in Galaxy City in 1948 to an upper-middle class family. His father had fought in WW2 against the 5th Column and was fairly proficient with offensive magic. It is unknown whether it was some residue of a spell from his father or if the magic was just a strange sort of mutation, but what is known is that even as a baby he had an innate magical power that manifested itself mentally.

Evan slowly learned that he could see into the minds of others, and his first glimpses of strong emotion and pain effected him deeply. His mother would always visit him when she was upset and Evan would always know just the right way to make her feel better. After the war his father wanted nothing to do with magic or fighting and at first was afraid and resentful of his son's power. He realized after a time that Evan's first experiences with his power had taught him a deep respect for other peoples emotions. Eventually even Evan's father began to help and nurture his power.

School was easy for Evan, being able to see his teachers' minds made absorbing knowledge simple and fast. He progressed fast through school and began studying on his own to learn more about the human mind and how he could use his power to help others. He was being scouted by numerous hero organizations, but Evan had no desire to be a hero. Evan wanted to help, but through medicine and council. Evan graduated high school early and started college as soon as he was able. He majored in psychiatry and began the process of applying what he learned in school to what he had learned by looking inside the minds of others.

After years of study Evan got his M.S. and immediately began working on his doctoral thesis. He pioneered psychiatric techniques of delving into human minds in order to adjust or manipulate the mind a tiny bit at a time in order to cure many disorders, including schizophrenia, bi-polar disorder, obsessive compulsive disorder, and others. He was hailed as a genius in the medical world and set up a practice in his hometown of Galaxy City.

The Protege

It was a few years later that the doctor met the woman who would end up affecting his life for a long time to come. Viera Rosseau was the first person Dr. Donisthorpe had ever met that had the same power as him. Not only was she empathic and could see the minds of others, but her power was also innate and magical in nature. Dr. Donisthorpe recruited her soon after she received her B.S. She began work on her master's degree with Evan and soon became his best assistant. Rosseau was Evan's protege and they became internationally renowned for their work. The greatest moment came when Dr. Donisthorpe was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1999.

It was around this time that the Doctor began finding the reasons for some of the problems that Rosseau and he had been having with certain patients. These patients seemed to be immune to the adjustments that were used and even more extreme and less subtle manipulations were not effective. Evan began to suspect outside intervention, some sort of outside source of mental control or manipulation. A young girl named Lucy had become a particularly vexing case, as she showed no signs of improvement despite the use of every technique developed by the Doctor and Rosseau. Lucy was violent and had nearly killed herself and her family multiple times. She complained of hearing demons and dreaming about fire and blood. After nearly exhausting himself delving into Lucy's mind Evan finally found the problem. When Lucy complained about hearing demons, she wasn't having hallucinations like most schizophrenics, she actually had a demon living deep inside her mind.

The Doctor and Viera explored many options before in late 2001 Dr. Donisthorpe decided he was going to project himself mentally directly to the demon in the attempt to parley with it and possibly save Lucy's life. Evan had prepared himself for the worst, and had decided to not include Rosseau due to the danger. Evan was willing to die to save Lucy and for better or worse he didn't want to drag Rosseau with him, she had to continue the work for the good of all.

The Birth of Dr. Discombobulation

Alone with Lucy, Dr. Evan Donisthorpe entered her mind and pressed forward directly to the innermost recess where the psyche of the demon hid. Upon entering he spoke words of parley and friendship, but was immediately attacked as a response. Evan had never experienced anything like it and very soon his empathic abilities were not able to keep up with the psychic assault on his mind. He tried every method he knew of to control the demons mind but to no avail. His empathic abilities were much more suited to helping others and soon Evan found himself backed into a corner with no way to escape. It was at this moment that something changed in Evan. His subconscious suddenly let a huge blast of psychic energy tear from his mind. The demon's psyche reeled back from the assault and was met with even more. Psychic energy began to pour uncontrolled from the Doctor's mind and now the demon was on the defensive.

While Evan had told Rosseau to stay away, it just wasn't in her nature to not be near in case something went wrong. Sensing the battle within Lucy's mind Rosseau rushed inside to find Dr. Donisthorpe and help in any way she could. With the demon's defenses down, Rosseau entered the inner sanctum with ease and found the Doctor ripping apart the demon with his mind while laughing maniacally. Rosseau shouted his name and suddenly the assault turned towards her. Dr. Donisthorpe lost his mind that day, but Rosseau lost 7 years of her life to the coma he put her in.

After crushing the minds of Rosseau and the demon the Doctor did not, for some reason, turn on Lucy. Maybe it was instinct or maybe he was just too distracted, but Lucy survived. Cured of her demon she lives on today helping the clinic in any way she can. The clinic lives on without the once good Doctor though. Dr. Donisthorpe went on a psychic rampage and was eventually forced by Longbow and Paragon Police to flee to the Rogue Isles. Dr. Evan Donisthorpe died that day in the battle and the megalomaniac Dr. Discombobulation was born.

The Return of Viera Rosseau

Through psychic manipulation, strategic alliances and murder the Doctor grew in power in the Rogue Isles and Paragon City unbeknownst to all but a few. He dipped his mental tendrils into nearly every criminal organization in the Isles creating a network for the sole purpose infiltrating Arachnos. Dr. D subtly added his name to the list in Kalinda the Fortunata's mind of the Destined Ones and began his progress up the Arachnos hierarchy. His purpose was to learn the plans of the most diabolical villain of them all, Lord Recluse. After learning of Recluse's plan, the fate of the Destined Ones and the power of all the Incarnates in general, Dr. Discombobulation decided that in order for the multi-verse to ever have any sense of balance, all the Incarnates in all their forms must be eradicated at any cost to human rights or life. In their place he would establish himself as ruler using his powers to keep order.

7 years after that fateful day the Doctor learned through his sources that his old protege, Viera Rosseau, had finally come out of her coma. He kept his spies actively watching her during her 2 year recovery in physical therapy, but left her alone and held no real ill will towards her. Very soon after awakening Rosseau learned what had happened, and began hearing of the people killed by Evan and his current status as a full fledged Arch-Villain. She wanted to seek him out, but she was too needed by the old clinic and too weak from her coma to search for him yet. She sought others to help her in her work and to bring the clinic back to its former size under Dr. Donisthorpe. By the time her recovery was over the clinic was ready to run on its own and she could leave to seek her former friend and mentor.

The Arch-Villain and the Empath

The Doctor knew that through his association with the Vanguard Rosseau would eventually find him and try to confront him. He allowed her to find him in the hopes of coercing her to join his cause. He hoped that if she saw he was willing to fight for a cause like removing the Rikti that she may see the good in what he was doing. During their battles with the Rikti Rosseau saw the unbridled psychic power that Dr. D had developed. She saw the same savagery and look in his eyes as the day he put her in a coma. He explained his plan of Incarnate genocide across the multi-verse thinking that she would respect his end goals and instead it showed her just how far he had fallen from his former self.

Rosseau knew that she couldn't hope to defeat him with her empathic abilities and decided from that day to do everything she could to tear apart the Doctor's psychic network from the inside. Rosseau began forming ties with heroes resistant to psychic powers, while honing her own ability to alter minds. She has continued to work with the Doctor through Vanguard, all the while watching and waiting to see a moment where his mental fences are down and she can get inside. The Doctor, of course, knows her plans, but his power has grown substantially and in his arrogance believes himself to be invulnerable to mental manipulation. He continues to watch Rosseau while pursuing his master plan of multi-verse domination.

Alliances

The Discombobulatory

A loose organization of spies and mentalists spread throughout Paragon City and the Rogue Isles. In the rare instances combat is needed most minion types consist of enemy soldiers converted to allies forcefully. Broken into divisions they are each led by one of the Doctors most trusted allies.

Corpsette

Powers: Radiation Blast/Radiation Emission

The Inhuman Corpsette is a radioactive undead that retained sentience after irradiation. Due to her status as being dead, she is single-minded and cares nothing for life or worldly comforts. She is intelligent, emotionless and is the only close ally to have no mental adjustment from the Doctor. Corpsette's quest for revenge goes hand in hand with Dr. D's plans. Although it is unknown what will happen once her revenge is accomplished currently she is highly important to Dr. D. She is loyal by choice and as such is one of Dr. Discombobulation's most trusted associates. She is Dr. D's chief strategist and commonly fights by his side weakening and destroying enemies.

The Valentine Rabbit

Powers: Archery/Pain Domination

Valentine is an interesting case. Once a minor diety of love under Cupid, Valentine found she preferred shooting people to making them fall in love. The Doctor did manipulate her initially to facilitate an introduction, but has since required none for her to stay loyal. Her zeal for killing keeps her loyal as long as she has an outlet. She currently is his chief enforcer. When sublety is lost and battle is the only answer Valentine is almost always there, shooting explosive arrows and relishing in the pain of everyone around her.

The Wind Banshee

Powers: Electric Blast/Storm Summoning

Once a hero, born in a family of heroes, the Wind Banshee seems an unlikely villain. Dr. D had once had ties to her family's supergroup during his work as a doctor. While some heroes brought him villains to be cured, they had attempted to recruit Evan for interrogation purposes. He of course refused at the time. When the Wind Banshee was forced to hide from her family in the Rogue Isles, Dr. D was the only person she knew. He immediately began influencing her mind in subtle ways. He gives her reasons to justfiy his actions and then gives her a little mental push into seeing it his way. She still considers herself to be good, not a villain. The Wind Banshee is quite proficient at combat, but handles diplomacy for the Doctor when mental adjustment is not wanted. Her position as a former hero is invaluable for intel.

Captain Corrupticus

Powers: Bane Spider Executioner, no known powers

The Captain is an Arachnos Executioner who has been in the business for a long time. Dr. D first encountered the Captain hunting Longbow in Nerva Archipegelo. He was unable at first to get past the Arachnos indoctrination without more invasive methods so he set up situations where they would have to work together while slowly whittling away at his mental defense. When the Doctor finally got in neither Arachnos nor Capt. Corrupticus noticed anything had changed. He got through in such a way as to leave the Captains mental training intact while only allowing the Doctor in. Being an Executioner, Capt. Corrupticus has access to Lord Recluse himself and is vital in his work as a spy within Arachnos. He is also sometimes seen working with the Valentine Rabbit.

Appearance

Dr. Discombobulation is well spoken and well dressed. He enjoys fine alchohol, fine cigars and fine food. He tends to only speak when needed as he feels words to be unexpressive and dull. He is always seen with a cigar and almost always wears a suit. Dr. D usually wears white and burgundy colors. He has the ability to project an image of himself into the minds of others. He will sometimes project a demonic form to instill fear or disguise himself as Longbow to infiltrate heroic organizations.

Personality

Dr. D is extremely self-centered and obsessed with his plan of Incarnate genocide and multi-verse domination. He cares nothing for the feelings or desires of others unless they can be used to fit his own desires. Dr. D does not hesitate to kill if needed and has no issues with invading the minds of others. He considers strong people to be tools to be used and the weak to be nothing but sheep worthy of slaughter. He sometimes starts laughing maniacally in battle. A small amount of fighting can put him in a state of pure domination making him very hard to resist or influence. Once attained he can maintain that state indefinetely(permadom). The first thing he does every morning is crush the minds of a minion or two to attain this state.
