Origins

Frost Device was born in the mid 17th century as X'arstaryn, a male ice dragon, among a small family of dragons residing in the Scandinavian Mountains of Norway. As a hatchling, X'arstaryn was not the best student. As second-born in his family, he possessed little interest in utilizing his inherent gifts. He learned what he need to for survival but wasn't driven by power. Of course, by this age of the world, dragons existed in secret. The age of science was upon the Earth and there was little room for mysticism and magical abilities. As his family worshipped a Draconic god that stood for law and good, X'arstaryn was raised to respect the law and to be kind. Killing was only done out of necessarily, such as for survival.

X'arstaryn watched the world of man from a distance. When old enough, he would fly to various points in Europe to observe the various cultures in peace and in war. This, however, would eventually become boring to the young dragon and he would grow to be dissatisfied. Also, Draconic society was at a relative standstill, probably caught in as much social order (or disorder) as human societies. As X'arstaryn was now old enough, he left the next to create his own home.

The 200 year old dragon decided to venture to the 'new world' and would soon find himself in Northern Canada in the Arctic Circle. At some point on his journey, X'arstaryn unknowingly went through a portal, taking him from his home dimension to the Primal Earth dimension, a dimension parallel to his own. He never noticed the difference. In the Arctic Circle, he created a home in a glacier and would eventually go to sleep. As X'arstaryn slept, the world changed.

Enter Bastilla Frost

In the dawn of the 21st century, X'arstaryn senses became aware to nearby distress. A young scientist, Dr. Bastilla Frost, was in the Arctic on an expedition and had become separated from her group. Bastilla had fallen through ice and feel into the water at the bottom of a cavern. She had just enough strength to get herself to the icy shore but was already starting to freeze to death, hypothermia setting into her system.

X'arstaryn sensed he was now frozen within ice to a degree and knew it would be better for his body to remain sleeping. He recalled lessons from his youth about the manipulation of the Draconic essence and aimed to help the young woman. Of course, as previously mentioned, X'arstaryn was not a good student in such things. He sent nearly the entirety of his Draconic essence to the young woman's body was in shock. X'arstaryn began to fuse his essence with Bastilla's body to save her however, as he lacked proper knowledge of what to do, X'arstaryn possessed her body. The process of the possession was enough to save Bastilla's life. However, the damage was done and her mind was damaged. The regenerative aspects of X'arstaryn's essence would eventually be able to repair the damage in time. Until then, Bastilla's consciousness would be suppressed. X'arstaryn now resided within human flesh while his dragon body remained asleep.

Search parties had been searching for Dr. Frost and would find the possessed doctor alive. They were quite surprised she had survived and found her story even more unbelievable. While the heads of the research team felt Bastilla should be sent back for a proper medical and psych evaluation, one of the team members pulled the merged entity aside to speak in private. The team member revealed herself to be the shape-shifting heroine known as Wayfinder. She had come on the expedition undercover for security as there was a threat of Malta Group activity in the area. Wayfinder believed X'arstaryn/Bastilla's story and decided to take her back to Paragon City as the threat had already been dealt with earlier.

Welcome to Paragon City

Frost Device.jpg
The atmosphere was festive in Paragon City when Wayfinder and X'arstaryn arrived in Paragon City. X'arstaryn had access to some of Bastilla's knowledge, particularly what she held dear, which was science, and that intridged the dragon. Also, the dragon's ice abilities were begining to develop in Bastilla's body. So, it was not long before X'arstaryn decided to try out a little heroism against some of the gangs in Paragon City. That was when she came across Dego Minomori and Vanessa Tremaine of the Samiel Dayne Industries' Wolfcry Division. X'arstaryn rather quickly came up with a superhero name and, while it was not the most original, it definitely designed the dragon's abilities: Frost Device. Going as 'Frost' for short, she quickly adapted to the name and began her enjoyable tenure with the Wolfcry Division, making many new friends and allies. Though, because Frost slept through the entire 20th century, she tends to be at a loss to many of the pop cultural references brought up by her teammates.

Around this time, Frost also first encountered the Clockwork. At first, she was quite interested in the little robots, wondering how they functioned, but then the shocks began. Frost was unprepared for their attacking her. She hated to attack them, but quickly dispatched with the little robots. However, soon Frost noticed them all over the city. Anywhere she went, Frost was shocked and attacked by the Clockwork. It was as if they could sense where she was and were drawn to her. Her 'war' with the Clockwork had begun.

It was because of this 'war' that Frost would stumble upon the ruins of Overbrook, known commonly by the citizens as Faultline. Frost found herself and overwhelmed by Clockwork in Skyway City and found it nigh impossible to escape to freedom. Nearly backed into a corner, Frost fled through tunnel in the south wall of the region. There she found what would be her home, befriending local heroes Fusionette and Faultline (she always refers to the area as Overbrook because it can be confusing to talk about Jim Temblor as Faultline and then refer to the area) as well as Penelope Yin. Frost would, at first, visit and patrol the area with her friends. She didn't initially live in Faultline as S.D.I. had adequate facilities for her to live in Skyway City.

Trouble on the Horizon

While X'arstaryn wasn't much of a student as a hatchling, with Bastilla Frost's intellect, Frost Device learned much about technology and progressed very well as a heroine. She worked with her friends and comrades in the Wolfcry Division to face many threats. She began working with both the Midnight Squad and the Vanguard and even became an ally to the members of the Freedom Phalanx. But she never realized actual forces were plotting against her.

Enter Doctor Xander George, a crazed scientist and expert of dragonkind who believed himself to be a descendant of Saint George of Lydda, the dragon slayer. Dr. George learned of Frost after having broken his way into the Portal Corporation's network. Frost Device had recently started working with the Portal Corporation and began inter-dimensional travel. He then coordinated with Circle of Thorn and Crey Industries to abduct and experiment on Frost.

While the doctor was planning, Frost had run into her own problems. As she would learn later, entering into the Shadow Shard dimension would begin a reaction in her body would eventually lead to Bastilla Frost's body taking on a dragonoid body. The cause, the would be learned much later, is that X'arstaryn was from the Shadow Shard dimension, long before the Madness. The dragon essence was going to continue to transform Bastilla's body unless X'arstaryn was removed. However, the dragon's lack of attention in his lessons centuries created a lack of knowledge to do such a thing. Tina McInterye and the scientists figured out a possible means of extracting the essence based on knowledge of Kheldian bonding, however, before the experiment could be performed, Frost was abducted.

Frost Device v2.0

Dr. George's plan had was to let the Circle of Thorn extract X'arstaryn's essence so that he could recover the dragon's body. His plan was to use the use the dragon's DNA to create new warriors for him to control. He had promised them to Crey Industries, however, he had no real intention of turning his 'children' over. The Circle of Thorns extracted both Bastilla's soul and X'arstaryn's essence. Bastilla's body became host for one of the Oranbega. Meanwhile, Dr. George, after leaving the Circle of Thorns and stealing a spell, used Crey resources to recover X'arstaryn's body and move it to the old Portal Corps building in the area now known as the Hive, home of Hamidon. Luckily for Frost and Bastilla, both the Wolfcry Division and Frost's friends were on the case.

Beta Defender had received an emergency distress from Frost shortly after the abduction and Dego, leading Wolf Larson, Assessment, and Lady Lightblade while getting, assistance from Fusionette, Faultline, and Mirror Spirit, fight the Circle of Thorns to recover Bastilla's body and soul. In order to recover X'arstaryn's essence, the group must venture to the Thorn Isle, however, when they arrive, the learn that Ice Mistral has broken in, seeking the essence of an ice dragon for herself. After defeating Ice Mistral and holding the essence in a special container given to the group by Mercedes Shelton, the group learns from Agent G the location of the dragon's body.

Apparently, Hamidon was not very fond of humans being in its domain and the Devouring Earth were already attacking the facility when the heroes arrived. With Longbow support lead by Captain Wilhelmina Dietrich, the facility was stormed and the group found X'arstaryn's body...only they did not find a dragon, they found a girl. The spell Dr. George had stolen from the Circle of Thorns was a shape-shifting spell and he transformed X'arstaryn into a human female so that the dragon could be moved easier and guarded. Dr. George's expertise in dragon's apparently failed him on that fact that X'arstaryn was a male dragon. After Dr. George was defeated, the group quickly left the labs before the Devouring Earth overran it.

Mercedes aided the essence and soul transfers allowing Bastilla to be back in control of her body and Frost in her own. As Dr. George was a scientist rather than a spell caster, Frost's body was unstable and there was the threat that should could transform into her full dragon form at any moment. So Frost was forced to begin studying to use her own inherent magical abilities in order to control the spell. She decided to keep the female form and with the help of Lady Grey and Norwegian authorities, the name 'Frost X'arstaryn' was legally adopted, granting Frost Norwegian citizenship and a special work visa to continue her duties in Paragon City.

Infiltration

Frost Device is pressured by the operative Agent Crimson to go undercover within the Arachnos. Frost agrees under the condition that Vandellia be aware of all of Frost's assignments and status. Because of Vanguard access points, Pocket D, and magical entry points to the Midnight Squad's library, Frost will have little problem moving back and forth between the Etiole Islands and Rhode Island in the United States so long as she acts with discretion. Because of her rather anonymous nature and her recent change in appearance, Frost is off the Arachnos' radar, thus making an ideal candidate. The reason for the infiltration and Frost's overall objective was to learn why Longbow efforts to take in refugees from the Rogue Isles as well as those wishing to leave the Arachnos have gone arise. Frost learned that Westin Phipps, head of Haven House in Grandville, was behind it all. Unfortunately for Frost, she was exposed to a much darker side of the Longbow that has left her distrustful of the organization as a whole and she no longer has any contact with Crimson.

Frost X'arstaryn & Rebecca Frost
Also, while in the Etiole Islands, Frost was cloned. As it was a clone of her human form and lacked X'arstaryn's essense, her clone, known as Rebecca Frost, had no Draconic abilities. Her physical body was capable of performing as Frost had as a widow. When Frost was ready to leave the Arachnos, she asked her 'sister', as she refers to Rebecca, to take her place. Rebecca, as Arachnos Agent X'arstaryn, was stationed at the Arachnos base in New Overbrook and traded in her Widow gear for Bane Spider gear, an act to differentiate herself from Frost. She uses Frost's old tiara to keep her mind filtered from the Bane Spider Network. Rebecca had also chosen to take over spy operations with the Longbow, working with Agent Indigo due to her distrust and dislike of Crimson.

Unleash the Dragon

Curious about the threat Praetoria is to primal Earth, Frost has begun to travel to Praetoria to learn more about the citizens, the Power Division, and the Resistance. She spent the better part of a week there, her more advanced psychic training allowing her to be invisible to the Seer Network. She learned from the Cultural Direction & Education Center (CDEC), reading, as well as from Resistance members with whom she spoke. And just like in Primal Earth, Frost had altercations with the Clockwork King, known in Praetoria as Metronome. During this time, Frost also began to refocus the development of some of her abilities, drawing forth those natural to her as a dragon rather than rely upon technology as much as she has in the past.

Frost began to focus on Paragon City's mind control related crimes and had developed an understanding for methodologies of control. Paragon City has a lot of mind control related crimes stemming from Crey Industries (alleged), Tsoo, Carnival of Crime, Rikti & Lost, Arachnos, Circle of Thorns, the Devouring Earth, Nemesis, and the Banished Pantheon, not to mention Praetorian mindwashing. Frost is a little confused on the difference between brainwashed and mindwashed.

Meanwhile, Rebecca had a short relationship with Volt Vigilante, one of Frost's teammates in the Wolfcry Division. The relationship began when Matthew Henderson developed an attraction to Frost and then mistook Rebecca for her twin when the two met on the streets of Paragon City. The death of Volt's mother led Veevee (as he was affectionaly known among his teammates) down a dark path that led to the two separating.

Rebecca's work with the Arachnos led to the retrieval of a symbiotic entity that the agent was forced to merge with to save her life. Arachnos scientists told Rebecca that she needed to be in quarantine as they helped her. Instead, without concern for Rebecca's health, the doctors were studying the symbiote and how it bonded with a human host and allowed the process to complete itself. Frost, her teammate, Beta Defender, and Matari Inai, all worked to free Rebecca, erase all data on the symbiote, and fake her death.

With Rebecca staying in Paragon City and Arachnos free, Frost redesigned her lair for herself, Rebecca, and Shade Smythe to all live. Ness Tremaine, in a business venture, asked Frost and Dr. B. Margaret "Margie" Holmes, also known as Lady Lightblade, to assist in her investment in the Happy Penguin Ice Cream Company, which Frost had been more than happy to to do, particularly with her cravings for ice cream.

V archetypeicon arachnos widow.png Draconic Essence (Powers) V archetypeicon dominator.png

X'arstaryn is first and foremost a dragon and that is power in itself. It can be considered magical, though she often uses it for technological means as a power source to her equipment. Knowledge acquired from Lunar Wall on technomancy, the use of magic to affect technology, has allowed Frost to create a better link between her essence and her equipment. Dragons are naturally psionic and communicate via telepathic Draconic to one another. Further development of psychic abilities is natural to dragons. Her essence is responsible for her ability to heal as well as her longevity. This also allows her to drink milkshakes and eat ice cream without fear of caloric gain.

In combative situations, the Draconic essence allows Frost Device to generate ice from the moisture in the air and project it as an attack. The simply frosty bite of the cold chill from even Frost's simplest attack is enough to give her opponents pause as to whether or not to continue their present course of action. For the more stubborn villain, Frost is capable of freezing the area around him, entrapping him for a few moments, or even calling forth a small, localized snow storm.

All About The Shoes

FDPumps.jpg

Frost Device is quite comfortable in high heels and loves them. Being a dragon, the slant of the foot and the shifting of the weight to the ball of the foot and toes feels more natural to her. She has no problems running in heels and actually moves faster in them than she would were she wearing "flat" shoes. She is not insane with the height, keeping the heel at roughly 3 inches in height, give or take half an inch depending on the shoe. Frost is fine in boots or court shoes, the classic pump, but dislikes strappy sandals, open-toed shoes, sling back shoes, and mules, finding the variants to be a crime to a very beautiful look. She is indifferent to platform shoes but will not wear them. She will go barefoot before ever wearing a sandal.

Frost enjoys a scene from the television series, the "X-Files", in the episode "Hollywood A.D." were Téa Leoni (playing herself to act as Agent Scully in a movie about the X-Files) ask Agent Scully (played by Gillian Anderson) how she runs in high heels. Agent Scully then proceeds to run up and down the set, in the background, while other characters talk. She was a little disappointed to learn later that person running in the heels was Gillian Anderson's stunt double but that did not take away from her enjoyment of the scene.

Drones

Frost has a small number of drones that tend to follow her around and assist her while on missions. Their controls are implanted within the wrist structure of her uniforms. One drone increases her perception while another acts a decoy for attacks. She has a gun drone which fires stun rounds and a little helper drone which...basically runs around to look cute while keeping aware of Clockwork threats.

Specialty Suit

FDSSuits.jpg
FDWolfcry.jpg

Frost Device original wore one of Wayfinder's outfits as her first costume. Then Serge at Icon designed her a costume he felt was more fitting for the icy heroine. Of course, that costume was designed for Bastilla's body. When Frost was returned to her own body, though still in female form, she wanted to work on a slightly new costume design and it help that S.D.I.'s Research and Developement Labs had something ready for the members of the Wolfcry Division.

From the elements used in a shape-shifting armor used by the company's founder before his passing, the researchers developed a biotechnological shape-memory material based upon Rikti technology. The material possess the ability to heal itself from various damaging elements including heat, cold, electrical fields, and tears. The material can also mimic the appearance and feel of other materials. These suits possess the ability to shape-shift into various, alternative forms providing uniform variation as well as an official uniform to Wolfcry personnel. In addition, communication technologies are built into the suits allowing for communication amongst the members of the Wolfcry Division as well as access to Paragon City emergency channels.

Frost currently has 4 of the 5 of the uniforms set: her official Wolfcry uniform, her Vanguard uniform, her personal costume, and a version of the Night Widow outfit. Frost's Night Widow uniform was worn with a special psionic tiara developed from the remains of the PsychoChronoMetron. The headband allowed Frost Device to project a false mental image of her mind to telepaths, particularly fortunatas. Anyone who tried to read Frost's mind while she was wearing the headband would only mind up the mind of a young human woman who was doing nothing particular with her life until she decided to join the Arachnos. This false mental image was created with the assistance of Sister Psyche. From there, it was up to Frost to keep her mind on her tasks and assignments. This tiara has now been passed on to her sister, Rebecca.

Stun Weaponry

Frost Device possesses an assortment of stun weaponry as she is in opposition to killing, even killing vile, evil villains. Frost utilizes a gun drone which releases stun rounds instead of normal ammunition. She also uses mines which release a high-voltage, low-amperage electrical charge similiar to what would be found in a taser when they detonate, rather than normal explosive effects expected from a mine. The release of this energy is capable of knocking opponents off their feet.

As a Night Widow, Frost's usually poisonous weaponry has been replaced with a anesthetic neurotoxic variant, given to her by Ghost Wake designed to simulate the same effects as the standard darts and 'spines'. The toxin induces a catatonic state that mimics death, causing body temperature to drop as well as lose of color to the body. The effect can last for around 14 hours in a normal person. As there are Longbow agents assigned to 'clean up' after Frost, evidence of this deceit is removed before Arachnos investigators and arbiters can learn otherwise.
