Personality

Stubborn / Persistent

Jonny has a mind of his own. He is not easily swayed into other ways of thinking. This leads to a rather stubborn denial of other people's advice and blindness to options he doesn't want to see. On the flip side, once he sets his mind to something, he is rather persistent in his pursuit of his goals.

Guardian

Jonny is protective of the people around him. Though he didn't often let it show, the trauma of the invasion, necessity for survival, and triumphant escape have led him to a less reserved expression of his watchfulness. To the point that he has taken on the mantle of hero.

Leader

Jonny is a natural leader. It is not something he aspired to and power isn't something he seeks. However, he has a presence and when there's no one overtly taking control, they often look to him. This is how he became leader of his high school clique. This is how he gathered a group during the invasion. This is why people followed him as he led them to escape from the nightmare.

Background

Youth

Jonny was raised in a small, rural Ohio town with his twin sister Joanna and younger sister Christina. With both parents working just to make ends meet, the three were often left at a babysitter's during the day when they were younger. When they got older, Jonny spent most of his time at school and school events. Eventually, the absence of their parents much of the time led the three to spend most of their time with their respective circle of friends.

Jonny was interested mostly in cars and had attracted a group of kids with similar interests. He was their leader by unspoken consensus. In high school, Jonny developed a stubborn and somewhat anti-authoritarian personality, doing pretty much what he and his friends wanted with little respect for adults' wishes. Since most of the time this simply meant working on cars or cruising about town, their activities went largely unpunished due to two simple facts: Jonny was the most solid player on the baseball team and his football skills were matched only by a couple others, one of whom was in Jonny's circle of friends.

Invasion

Before the Invasion there were the Sightings. Shadows with no source. Malevolent presences spooking people. Stories that most dismissed when they were a handful. As time went on, however, some began to believe that perhaps this shadow entities were real.

Jonny's younger sister Chrissy claimed to have seen the Shadow People since before she could remember. The basis for her fear of the dark. Jonny was one of the few who would listen to her tales of the Shadow People. He didn't know at first whether he believed her or not. It seemed like little kid stuff or crazy people talk, but his sister was so sincere in her pleadings.

Then came the Invasion. Jonny was thrust into a Nightmare from which there was no waking up. This Nightmare was Real. It started with the Disappearances. Of the approximately two thousand residents in Gloomsville, more than 1800 were taken in the night.

This left the town nearly deserted. The only people left were those who had been in the school during the night. The athletes were celebrating a victory and the thespians were having their post-play party. Of course, more than just athletes and actors were attending this double celebration.

Survival

At first, no one really knew what to do. The town was somehow cut off from the outside world. The borders simply ended in the Void. The few adults remaining tried to organize the kids into a semblance of life while they tried to figure out what was going on.

Some of the kids, however, were content to go off on their own. Jonny, of course, was one of these. Most of his remaining crew went with him, along with his younger sister and a few other kids. At first, things fell into something of a normality. Unfortunately, it wasn't long after that the Shadow People began appearing.

The first time Jonny came face to face with one of these entities, he was surprised. While they did have an aura of darkness around them, they were quite solid. The glowing purple eyes of the creature stared at him for a moment, as if itself surprised at seeing him. Then it brought out a device of some form and aimed it at Jonny. Jonny jumped to the side.

The device emitted some sort of energy in the direction of Jonny's previous location, but it didn't seem to do anything. Jonny had already picked up a length of wood and swung it at the thing. Hitting it directly in the head, the creature fell to the ground and promptly dissipated. This was the beginning of Jonny's fight.
