Hero Kennaloud

From Unofficial Handbook of the Virtue Universe

Hero Kennaloud was my very first RP character looong ago on a server in Neverwinter Nights. This current Hero Kennaloud is my attempt to spin his story around into City of Villains, although this -isn't- a port of a DnD character into a CoV universe. It's a complicated story but you'll have to trust me!

Once Upon a Time

The following is a short summary of the story of Hero Kennaloud, which can be read in any story-book about fairy-tales IC'ly. It's a somewhat long story, but this is the low-down of it.

Hero Kennaloud was born in a land far, far away. A land of giants, a land of goblins, a land where magic thrived and technology was non-existant. He was born the younger of two brothers, though the Kennaloud parents put more stock in Hero than they did his older brother. They named him Hero to outline his destiny, that he would one day be the hero who would save their land and family from their nemesis, Velid, who loomed always in the shadows.

As soon as he could wield a weapon, Hero's father began to train him in the art of swordplay, while his older brother Sebastian was ignored. Everyday Hero did what his father told him and nothing more. This occurred until he reached the age of seventeen. Hero had enough of following in his father's footsteps. He wanted to a live a life of his own, and not one forged for him by his parents. He took his two katana's along with a bag of supplies and ran away from the Kennaloud farm. It would be quite some time before he would return.

Hero wandered the lands for many years. For a while, he became a mercenary. Then he was the brute force on a small pirate ship. Afterward an encounter with the law, he was left on his own. During this time, he received formal training from an old man on the ways of the dual katana. It was here he would learn a lesson that would forever stay in his mind. The sword that protects cannot afford to fail

There were many adventures had before Hero arrived at the Border, a land bordering the edge of good and evil. The people there constantly faced threats, and it would be here that Hero's true character would come out. He wandered into a tavern which was outside of the City of Good, and from there he began to aid the people of the land. They didn't ask where he came from, or what he wished, they simply accepted his aid. He started off small, running errands and such, moving up to defending merchants from bandits and other mythical monsters.

Soon Hero grew a reputation. He became known a "The Sword Saint". Yet still he ran from his past. Until one day, his past found him. His father arrived at the borderlands of Good and Evil, alongside a small group of hired swords. He was intent on bringing Hero back home, either willingly or through force. Hero, in a rage, lashed out and fought back, killing his father's hired swords, and then, in a heated battle, his own father. With his last words, his father revealed that he was under the spell of Velid this entire time, and that it was his intention to tear the Kennaloud family apart.

Devastated by this, Hero finally accepted his destiny. He knew he was not powerful enough to face his nemesis, and so he began to train, to fight creatures that we could only dream of. Giants larger than apartment buildings, dragons that flew through the air, creatures stirring within the darkness that could devour the souls of any who dared go near them. Hero faced them all, not alone, but with his dear friends, such as the noble Chert Wistain. The group of friends conquered everything thrown at them, including facing off against the leader of a demon army who burst into the heart of the Good city.

Once Hero's fame spread far beyond that of the Border, his brother, Sebastian Kennaloud, came to see him. Velid had recently taken over the Kennaloud lands, and would soon try to raise an army to begin conquering the rest of the world, including the Border. Hero knew that now was the time. He had to leave with his brother and face the evils of Velid. His goodbye was short and sweet; he did not want to worry his friends. Hero and his brother Sebastian set sail for their homeland. The two Kennalouds were never seen again in the Border. No one knows the fate of Hero, his brother, or Velid, though the lands in the Border remained safe from his touch. Those that knew Hero well lived on with his words echoed in their hearts:

The sword that protects cannot afford to fail.

Arrival

Hero was first found wandering into the Crossroads Hotel in Port Oakes, owned by a man named Leonard McCullen and his daugher Aisling. He somehow had enough money to purchase his own room for at least three months, though his demeanor was quite different from the normal Islander. Hero had a bright and enthusiastic look on his face, a look of wonder about everything around him. It almost seemed like he had no idea what device like a television or phone were. As well he had a rather old way of speaking, referring to men as sir's and women as lady, miss, or madame. According to Leonard McCullen, Hero is probably the weirdest person currently staying at the inn, though this insight was said with a grumble, as Hero always refers to Leonard often as, "Good Tavern-keeper!".

Leonard McCullen, owner of the Cross Roads Hotel

Leonard McCullen is the owner of the Crossroads Hotel, located near Dockside in Port Oakes. At the age of 55, he's given up the idea of turning the hotel into anything grand or outstanding; he's merely content with the cozy little place that it is. He doesn't make much money, due to the fact that most of his profits go to paying off the local thugs, whether it's the Hellions demanding bribes not to burn the place down, Marcones asking for "protection" money to fight the Hellions, or the Mooks saying they need the money to take down the Marcones once and for all.

The relationship with his daughter, Aisling, is a difficult one. Her mother died at childbirth, forcing Leonard to raise her alone. She disagrees with many of his stances, such as his desire to not start trouble with anyone. This often leads to the two arguing back and forth. Since Leonard didn't make much money, Aisling couldn't afford to move out of the Isles to go to college or attend Aeon University. Leonard hired her to be an accountant and cook for the hotel five years ago. He believes its for the best, as it allows him to keep an eye on her. Although he constantly bickers with her, Leonard has a deep concern for her safety.

Leonard does not care very much for Hero. The reason's range from Hero's boisterous (loud) nature, his seemingly ignorant cheerfullness, and also the fact that all of this has charmed Aisling. He'd kick Hero out of the hotel, if it wasn't for the large amount of money given to him to stay there for what came to be a total of three months.

Aisling

Aisling McCullen, cook and accountant of the Cross Roads Hotel

Aisling McCullen always seems to carry the same somber look on her face, a look that is shared by most of the people in the Isles. Aisling never had a mother-figure in her life, which would explain her somewhat tomboy-ish attitude. Leonard did his best to instill his values into Aisling as she group up, but she rebelled fiercely against it. At one time she was even the girlfriend to someone in the Hellions, though this only lasted a week before she was tired of being bossed around by his friends. She nearly dropped out of Port Oakes High in Sophomore year, until she turned her grades around and became an A+ student. Many of her teachers offered to help get her into Aeon University, but she refused on the grounds of wanting to do it herself. But that day of achieving college never came. Instead, she went in and out of various jobs in Port Oakes. Not because she lacked the ability to perform them, far from it. She was a hard-worker as a waitress, cook, janitor, manager, you name it, Aisling was able to do it well. But each business either closed down or fired her, due to a lack of money. It was always a matter of time until the place she worked at would be robbed either by an organized gang or a villain. At the age of twenty, she begrudgingly took up her father's offer to work in his hotel. She had thought it was only going to be a short term plan, but five years later, she is starting to think that perhaps there really is nothing to aspire to in the Isles.

There have been numerous occassions of Longbow agents offering to help Aisling, but she has refused. It isn't for the same reason as going to college. One bad incident with Longbow stained her memory of them forever, where she was beaten over the head and almost dragged to prison. Aisling had to deliver a suitcase that a man left in the hotel; this man happened to be on Longbow's wanted list. When Aisling was spotted handing the suitcase to him, Longbow assumed her to be one, super-powered, and two an accomplice, and then struck. The details were found while she was unconscious. She awoke with in the hospital in Port Oakes with concussions wounds and a large hospital bill to pay. Since then, Aisling has held a large distaste for Longbow and refuses any of their aid.

With the arrival of Hero Kennaloud, Aisling's curiosity has sparked. He shares very little of himself, his past, and what he does with Aisling and Leonard. Aisling has had several conversations with him, including an explanation as to what exactly Christmas is, the proper use of a television, and other technical details. But never has he told her anything about himself. This fact drives Aisling to find out more about Hero. There's just something about him that isn't right, and Aisling is determined to find out who exactly Hero Kennaloud is and what it is that drives him.

Wandering

Hero Kennaloud doesn't seem to be tied with any group, nor does he seem to hold any allegiance to anyone. This doesn't mean he isn't helpful; on the contrary, when his goals and the goals of other "adventurers" (as he refers) intersect, he will do everything in his power to aid his fellow "companions" towards their goal, so long as it doesn't get in the way or go against what he is trying to achieve. Because of this he has been seen numerous times with odd allies, ranging from an adventuring party with a snake-man, Egyptian woman, and a man with an odd accent controlling robots, to the Crimson Cutlass, Kichi, Graffiti Samurai, and others of the Dread Aces.

True Purpose

Hero's true purpose is unknown to everyone but himself, of course. He has not given any explanation towards why exactly he is in pursuit of various items such a a small jewel in the Independence Port Bank, or a magical item held by the Legacy Chain, to name a few. Although one night, Leonard and Aisling overheard him being scolded by some man for something that Hero supposedly did earlier that night. However the conversation ended with him giving over several items that he held, along with talk of a "deal" being kept. Hero did not comment on what it all ment when Leonard asked him.
