Hyperonides (a Greek word literally meaning 'Son of the High One') is my attempt to create both an homage to Superman and the Golden Age of comics. Where Stranglehold is my equivalent to Hades/Batman, Hyperonides was supposed to be my Mithras, my reborn Sun-God. I failed.

Somewhere in the formative process I was waylaid by Morrison's Marvel Boy, a highly recommended story that I couldn't possibly do justice by summarizing it here. Suffice to say that it contains a harsh criticism of modern-day corporate culture and capitalism. While I am more interested in more philosophical concepts such as the fascism/elitism inherent in the idea of superhumanity, Morrison's book was a very good guidepost for me.

Those superheroes in the sky / seem like a patriotic lie. / Mixed with a darkling Aryan dream / to figure in some madman's scheme. -- Garth Ennis, The Demon

Personality

Hyperonides is the product of the Creteia, a distant alien race. Meant to be both an ambassador of his people's culture as well as a walking, talking monument to their glory, his makers hardwired their philosophical teachings, the so-called Destiny Manifest into his mind. Incapable of not acting in accordance with the strict Destiny Manifest, he will often seem bland and conservative. Intractably polite, even-tempered, unshakably confident -- on in one word, boring.

One of the core tenets of the Destiny Manifest is 'All (sentient) Life is Sacred' however, and it is apparently allowed to override many, if not all, other tenets contained in the Manifest. As such, Hyperonides can and will spring to action as soon as he sees a human being in harms way, and often act in a very bold, some might say flamboyant, manner, putting himself in harm's way without hesitation.

Powers

Technically speaking, Hyperonides is a sentient living (if alien) being. However, his makers saw fit to equip him with both biological as well as mechanical advantages to allow him and his brethren to better fulfill their chosen duty. The centerpiece of these modifications is a giant Fusion-Heart; essentially a giant muscle that fills what passes for his ribcage. The Heart rhythmically contracts around an unknown fusile isotope, triggering a controlled Inertial Fusion, the energy from which powers his remaining organs and muscles. One fusion pulse from the Heart produces so much energy that it only needs to beat about once per earth minute.

As a side effect of his construction, his body requires no air or rest, though his brain requires resting periods. Usually about an hour's worth of meditation for every nine hours of uptime will keep Hyperonides at ease. Furthermore, his body only requires food and drink if he has actually sustained physical damage such as wounds or broken bones.

Cyclical Superhuman Strength

Hyperonides possesses physical strength vastly in excess of that or a normal human at all times. While he appears human on the surface, his musculature is far denser (and powered via nuclear fusion after all) and his bones far more durable (and containing far more metal) than a human's of comparable physical dimensions. However, when he pushes himself that strength increases vastly, though the exact level of increase is tied to the state of his current fusion pulse. Right after a pulse, his level of strength seems limitless, but as the pulse's energy wears off and is used up it declines.

While he has hinted that if push ever really came to shove, Hyperonides was able to super-charge his body by tapping into reserves he did not further specify, doing so would apparently put undue strain on his Fusion-Heart.

Plasma Generation

The pulses of Hyperonides Fusion-Heart create a lot of unneeded plasma exhaust. The exhaust is usually routed through a system of arterial pipes in his body and slowly allowed to disspate. If needed however, it can be routed into what appears as skin pores and employed in various ways. The most obvious application of this plasma exhaust is to sheathe himself in fire to keep enemies at bay or melt bullets.
