Owen Simmons - Green Energy Iconoclast

Simmons using his powers in lieu of a whiteboard

Born an hour north of Paragon City in Boston, Owen Simmons is one of the most prominent members of Paragon City's green energy industry. While a local hero, his journey from Beantown to the City of Heroes though took a lot longer than an hour.

Simmons showed mechanical aptitude from an early age. Whether it was a Lego set or an Erector Set or lavish model kits, Owen was three steps ahead of the learning curve. From those simple toys a passion for design and building grew. Additionally, there was something else Simmons excelled at ... energy. Born with an innate ability to examine, understand, and manipulate energy at the quantum level, Simmons spent half his life in a book and the other half mastering his abilities. He graduated high school at the age of sixteen, and enrolled, not surprisingly, in M.I.T.

Upon graduation, Owen created a series of start up internet companies. With the bubble growing, he made companies and sold them off for great profit. Well before the bubble burst, Frank had the capital to finance is personal project: Simmons Solutions.

Simmons Solutions was actually the dream of his father, a Boston sanitation work. He kept telling his son that the world could use new ideas about using the waste of society. "One man's trash is another man's gold," he would repeatedly say. Not wanting his son to be a typical engineer, William Simmons stressed the boundless energy of the sun, and the capabilities of recycling, and the wonders of the new technologies always around the corner. His father's passion resounded soundly in his son, and Simmons created Simmons Solutions to advance green technology and renewable resources. His brilliance, joined with some of the best minds of his generation, and his own unique understanding of energy has propelled Simmons Solutions to the top of the green energy movement.

Within six months of Simmons Solutions opening, it had secured fourteen different patents and five contracts with major real estate developers for green energy power plants. To this day the company continues to develop green energy solutions for numerous companies and government agencies. A personal crusade of Simmons is the area of Paragon City now known as Crey's Folly. Incensed that this beautiful area was ruined by corporate greed and lack of concern for the environment, Simmons has been working to clean up the area ... but to no avail. As soon as he comes up with one solution, the Freakshow, Rikti, or even Crey themselves someone work to undo the good he is attempting. Whenever Simmons Solutions may have difficulty, that is when the CEO turns in his business suit for his power suit.

Ionoclast - The Quantum Paragon

Simmons studying Rikti energy models

Dollars, patents, and brilliance are not always enough to safeguard ones dreams and make the world a better place. Sometimes you have to get down into the trenches, look the problem right in the face, and get your hands dirty. With his mastery over energy and his skills at manipulating his abilities for a wide variety of effects, Simmons created the costumed persona of Ionoclast, The Quantum Paragon. While Ionoclast initially was separate from Simmons in the eyes of the world, it didn't take long for Simmons' identity to be revealed. It hasn't hindered him however (in fact Simmons stock went up when it was revealed the owner and CEO was a super-hero). The celebrity didn't hurt his career, and it only drives Simmons to work harder to succeed.

Ionoclast's persona is little different from Simmons; he rejoices in the thrill of using his abilities to help the world and he is often overheard battling bad guys with his usual wry sense of humor for which he is notorious in the board room. His tactics are simple and straightforward. He overwhelms his enemies with pure energy, either at range or up close. If a matter needs logic and a reasoned solution, he is more than capable of whipping up technology or being as clever as the next genius, but there is a certain desire to get physical and tackle problems head on. Most contribute this to a need to stretch his legs from all his lab work. Others believe he is taking out his frustrations at the world's pollution on those who would get in his way.

He has also been tasked by Vanguard to help crack the code behind Rikti technology and power sources. His fundamental understanding of energy is a great boon, but his ignorance of Rikti tech balances this out and the result is he makes just as much headway as the rest of the dedicated task force ... but that has not stopped him. In fact, as Ionoclast, Simmons has had more opportunity to investigate unique energy signatures then if he were simply Owen Simmons alone. Taking advantage of this fact has led Simmons to release several new technologies, and has landed him in court on a few times while being sued by his competitors for unfair advantages and a lack of corporate ethics.

Whether he's in the lab, or on the street, Simmons only cares about helps his fellow man and getting humanity to live in ecological balance with the planet he loves so dearly. Of course there are those who run against this philosophy from time to time, and they don't take to kindly to Ionoclast at all. While he has consistently fought the larger villain groups in Paragon City, he has developed a small slew of arch-villains over the years. His repeated encounters with these foes usually end up with Ionoclast getting positive press and the villains getting a sound thrashing. This generally drives his foes to seek him out for revenge, continuing the cycle.

Heat Death - Crey experiment gone wrong

Heat Death

Jackson Prescott was a convicted thief and con artist. Sentenced to ten years in the Zig after this third strike, Prescott signed up for a "work release" program with Crey Industries. It turns out he could lay down on the job ... lay down on one of Crey's laboratory tables that is. Over the course of weeks Prescott was transformed at a molecular level, his cells gaining the ability to steal and re-direct heat. According to Prescott he was outfitted with a specialized suit to allow him greater control over his abilities. Crey public relations and legal sources claim Prescott stole the suit and escaped their facility. Whichever side is telling the truth, what is assured is that Prescott took the code-name Heat Death and began a crime spree throughout Steel Canyon.

Ionoclast, who constantly reminds his foe that Heat Death would be a better name for an cold powered villain, has managed to thwart Heat Death at almost every turn.

Current Whereabouts: Heat Death is currently back in the hands of Crey. The company's lawyers successfully lobbied prison officials and the courts that his powers were their property and they have since been trying to "reclaim" said property. Simmons has lobbied unsuccessfully to transport Prescott back to the maximum security level of the Zig. Simmons fears Crey is simply increasing Heat Death's abilities for their own ends, but can't prove it. He dearly hopes he is wrong and that he'll never face off against Heat Death again ... but he isn't that hopeful.

Powers: Heat Death has the ability to absorb and redirect heat energy for a variety of purposes, but is usually limited by his average intellect and lack of imagination.

Notable Encounter: Their most memorable encounter took place just outside the Gargarin Orbital Station. Heat Death was holding the station workers hostage in return for one billion dollars. Ionoclast, able to transmute his body into living energy to survive the vacuum of space, flew to the station and engaged Heat Death (who apparently also can survive unaided in space) in a spectacular combat that the station workers described as both dazzling and scary.

Radical Queen - Steampunk Sorceress

The Radical Queen

Not much is known about the villain styling herself The Radical Queen. What is known is not very pleasant. Her true name has never been determined and her DNA or fingerprints are not on record. She appeared a few years ago in an attempt to kidnap the Mayor of Paragon City, an attempt thwarted by Ionoclast after a pitched battle in Atlas Park.

The Radical Queen apparently has bartered with demonic forces from the plane of Oranbega. These forces have given her mystical power to manipulate free radicals. Why such a specific request was made is unknown, but the results are unquestioned. Her level of energy manipulation is at least as great as Ionoclast's own abilities, if not greater. Only Ionoclast's greater control and experience have carried the day. However it is presumed one day her experience will match Ionoclast's, and that is a day Simmons is not looking forward to.

Current Whereabout: The Radical Queen is currently in the care of M.A.G.I. who are exploring her abilities and the pact that she made, attempting to reverse it and render her a threat no more. Simmons has crafted multiple containment fields to assist M.A.G.I. in holding the Radical Queen. Most of the fields utilize zero point energy, an energy she has not shown mastery of at this time. She sits in her cell and stares at the bars, and every day Ionoclast is more and more convinced he will be facing her again sooner, and not later.

Powers: The Radical Queen has magically gained the ability to manipulate free radicals, which she has used to potent displays of power. Unlike Heat Death, she is quite intelligent and imaginative and M.A.G.I. fears there is no upper limit to her power.

Notable Encounter: Their most memorable encounter occurred under the streets of Atlas Park. The Radical Queen was attempting to locate and alter the chemistry of the Hydra. Her hope was to control all Hydra spawn throughout the world and in turn utilize her new found power to rule the planet in her name. Ionoclast flew into the sewer network, alongside numerous other heroes attempting to avert this global disaster.

Ionoclast was able to engage the Queen on various occasions in the labyrinth beneath the city, drawing her further and further away from the Hydra's head. As the Radical Queen was momentarily distracted by a wandering group of the Lost, Ionolcast was able to alter her own free radicals to emit a charge counter to the Queen's usual energy signature, rendering her powers inert and enabling her arrest and capture.

General Dynamic - Delusional technoloical overlord

General Dynamic

General Dynamic is perhaps the single most egotistical villain Ionoclast has faced. Gregory Ivanov is one of the world's most brilliant cybernetiscists. His creations have benefited countless individuals who otherwise would still be going through life with missing limbs. However Gregory's brilliance is matched only by his deranged mind. Not feeling that flesh and bone is good enough for humanity, Ivanov looks to turn all humans into cyber-men. While this is not the most original world domination goal (The Freakshow have a similar philosopy), Ivanov believes people will flock to his banner due to the superior quality and craftsmanship of his pieces.
