Junkyard Demon
From Unofficial Handbook of the Virtue Universe
History
Any official history of the cyborg known as “Junkyard Demon” is probably only known to some of the original members of the Midnight Squad, but what can be pieced together from news accounts goes something like this:
At some point in the late 1930’s, the Circle of Thorns tried to summon some sort of demon from the bowels of hell, and certainly not for the first time. Instead, they found themselves with a damaged, half-dead demon that was missing parts of its legs and one arm. (Some stories suggest that his legs were severed by the mystical pentagram used to summon him, and that apparently the Circle mages were attempting to summon a less-powerful and smaller creature.)
Regardless, the demon reacted as many of its ilk do, and despite its horrific injuries proceeded to wreak havoc, killing or wounding all the mages involved as it made its escape.
The demon was then seen in and around Paragon City for several days, continuing its mission of vengeance upon Circle mages even in its weakened state.
Apparently, at some point the Midnighter Squad was called in, probably to banish the demon back to where it had come from. For some reason, however, the demon formed some sort of alliance with the Midnight Squad, and found itself being “repaired” or fitted with some rather unusual prosthetic limbs. Hero registration records from the early 1940’s reveal one “Junkyard Demon” that is almost certainly the same creature that roams freely in Paragon City today, and there are some newspaper stories that talk of the unlikely savior of crime victims. He avoided the press, apparently preferring to wage his solitary war against the Circle without fanfare and apparently without allies.
In 1946, Junkyard Demon mysteriously vanished. All stories seem to indicate that the Circle of Thorns had apparently managed to banish the demon back from whence he was summoned.
63 years passed.
In 2009, Junkyard Demon reappeared in Paragon City, summoned again by Circle of Thorns mages. Once again, he appeared without his lower legs and proceeded to dismantle the magical circle, and the Circle mages. Contacting the Midnight Squad again, he found himself with newer lower appendages and another vendetta against the Circle, as well as criminals in general. While the Midnight Squad shuns most publicity, preferring to operate from the shadows, at least one member has recently confirmed an alliance with the creature.
While older stories don’t really dwell upon the personality of Junkyard Demon, 21st century reports suggest that he is now remarkably well-adapted to 21st century life and of at least average human intelligence. When not fighting crime, he enjoys reading, television, pizza, beer, and working on automobiles, as well as tinkering with modern-day cybernetics.
Magic and powers
Obviously, he’s a demon: tall, strong, some minor non-combat magical abilities, and extremely resistant to injury. In addition, he heals non-catastrophic injuries at a faster rate than most humans.
He’s also a cyborg: his right (cybernetic) arm is apparently even stronger than his natural arm, and he can easily pick up such things as cars and hurl them short distances. With his newest cybernetic legs, he’s able to leap extremely long distances, and may cause shockwaves upon landing. There seem to be some proprietary secrets involved with his cybernetics, and at least one expert has expressed a kind of amused awe at the mechanics involved.
His upper body is now covered with a large number of mystical tattoos, which have been observed to fade, reappear, glow, and occasionally and slowly rearrange themselves. When questioned directly, he simply laughed and said “Let’s just say that the Circle jerks won’t find me quite as easy to banish again, okay?”
