Background

Since the time of King Arthur, two powerful clans warred secret places throughout England, one championing the cause of light, and the other allied with the powers of darkness. However, these concepts of light and darkness were not mere formless ideals, for these clans possessed great supernatural power. The Serren clan included members descended from Nephilim, the forbidden children of angels and mortal women, who possessed terrible powers of searing light and binding magic, which they passed on, in turn, to their descendants. The le Fay clan was descended from the same fae spirits which even today watch over the sword Excalibur, and even claimed the legendary Morgana le Fay as their ancestor. This bloodline possessed subtle, yet powerful control over darkness and shadow, powers which were inherited by their children.

For centuries, these two clans fought in secret, each attempting to eradicate the other, for both clans felt that they were more worthy of the responsibility of protecting England (and later Britain) from the supernatural threats which lurked unseen to most. However, that hostility would be changed forever when, in midsummer of 1982, a girl was born to Allura le Fay, heiress of the le Fay bloodline and its powers. Allura had fallen in love with Virgil of the Serren clan, a talented warrior and wielder of the light-based powers of the Serren bloodline (though not its name), and bore his child, whom she named Rose.

Powers and Abilities

Rose was unusual almost from the moment of birth, not crying as most infants do, but calmly and curiously observing her surroundings. She learned to speak and to walk before she was even a year old, and by the time she was three, she had developed heterochromia - her left eye fading to a pitch black, and her right eye becoming a featureless white. Around age six, strange black markings began to appear on the left half of her body, while silvery traces of what seemed to be metal appeared on her right. These strange designs seemed to grow and change like writhing snakes, but never while one was looking at them. Only when unobserved would new patterns appear.

By the age of twelve, Rose had developed the ability to generate light and dark energy, bright white flames emanating from her right hand, wispy black shadows swirling around her left. She practiced with these abilities almost constantly, and discovered a myriad of uses for these powers.

Darkness

As she began experimenting with her abilities, Rose quickly learned that she could absorb small objects into the darkness surrounding her left hand, and reproduce them later. Any object undergoing this process seemed dramatically weathered by time, as though it had lain undisturbed for far longer than she actually kept it in the shadow. She was even able to partially step into this shadow herself, making her lighter than air, and able to fly with ease. She could also use the consumptive properties of the darkness to drain the life force of other people, drastically weakening them while healing her own wounds and revitalizing her energy. Finally, by casting forth the wispy shadow-stuff from within the darkness she created, she found that she could ensnare people in writhing, shadowy tendrils which reached forth from a mass of darkness, and reminded Rose of the snake-like markings on the left side of her body.

Light

Rose also began to be able to cover her right side in a silvery-white metallic sheath, which (later in life) proved durable enough to withstand gunfire (and once, a fragmentation grenade blast). This reflective metal was as indestructible as Impervium, but bent with her movements effortlessly, providing no hindrance to athletic motions. She quickly learned to shield herself from harm using this power, and is used to producing the sheath in response to being attacked. Furthermore, this metallic covering seems to drastically increase her physical strength, letting her lift up to 150 kilograms (about 330 lbs.) with just her right hand. She also developed the capability to project a blazing white fire from her right hand, which vastly increases the destructive power of her punches. With effort, she can unleash this fire in a concentrated blast, able to take out several enemies at once.

Yin/Yang

Rose's ultimate power comes when she combines her light and darkness abilities as one, producing uncontrollable effects of tremendous power which she does not fully understand. She has yet to master this technique, so still uses it only in times of direst need. It is this combination of two fantastically powerful, yet wholly opposite energies which has enabled Rose to embark upon two seemingly contradictory paths in the journey of an Incarnate. Rose is the Incarnate of both Light and Darkness, simultaneously.

Footnotes

  1. Rose is a Knight Grand Cross of the Order of Excalibur, enabling her to use the title "Sir" before her first or full name.
