Early Career

AnnaSophia Murray attended Duke University in Durham, North Carolina, majoring in Criminology. Her senior year, she was selected to join an FBSA "accelerated training" program for prospective agents and finished fourth of thirty participants, guaranteeing herself a spot in an FBSA class within a year after her graduation. She finished college with a 3.7 GPA and was accepted into the FBSA academy at Quantico, Virginia. Upon graduating, Anna was commissioned as a Special Agent, assigned to Paragon City's Steel Canyon branch. She requested and was given a month off during which she and her fianceƩ Daniel Shepard married, then they relocated to their new home in Blyde Square.

Talos Trouble

By the end of her first year on the job, Special Agent Shepard had proven herself an extremely capable agent, and was selected by her Section Chief Grant Benson to take part in an operation to shut down a gunrunning ring controlled by The Lost. The gang members were all taken into custody and roughly $2.5 million dollars worth of fully-automatic weapons were recovered. This early bright spot in Anna's career was tempered by learning upon her return to Quantico that her father had died of a heart attack while she was taking part in the on-site operation.

Losing All

After returning from her bereavement leave, Anna settled into a fairly normal FBSA career. When she was 31, she became pregnant, and was automatically placed on adminstrative duty for the duration of her pregnancy. Upon giving birth to her son Daniel Nicholas Shepard Jr., Anna applied for and was granted a temporary leave during which time she seriously considered retiring. Finally, however, she decided to return to the FBSA but to stay in her administrative position instead of going back to field work.

One month before her return, Anna and her family attended the grand opening of a Shop-Smart in Skyway City. After they arrived, a splinter Nictus cell launched a terrorist attack on the gathering. A small group of Peacebringers, who had intelligence about the impending attack, fought back, but were overwhelmed and unable to prevent the deaths of dozens of people. Tragically, in the aftermath of the battle, Anna found the bodies of her husband and son; Daniel had been killed by an energy blast to the neck, and Nicholas had been pinned beneath his father's body when he fell.

While cradling the bodies of her family, Anna became aware of an EMT attending to a Peacebringer who had suffered mortal injuries. When the man waved the EMT off, Anna made the impulsive decision to offer herself as the Kheldian's new host in order to take revenge on the Nictus. The Kheldian accepted her offer, and as his host body died, joined with Anna.

In the days leading up to her husband and son's funeral, Anna met with Sunstom and other Peacebringer leaders, designed a uniform for her new persona, and drafted a letter of resignation from the FBSA. She chose the name "Pale Fallen Angel" from one of her husband's favorite novels, then at the funeral, gave her resignation to her superior, Paragon City Section Chief Grant Benson. That night, Anna joined Sunstorm, Moonfire, and several other Peacebringers in a raid on a Nictus base that had manufactured some of the explosives used in the Shop-Smart attack. Ignoring Sunstorm's commands to the contrary, Anna killed several Council soldiers and defied him by making it clear that she had no intention of going out of her way to spare any others in the future.

Several days later, the situation repeated itself at another raid, and several Peacebringers began to approach Anna and inquire about being transferred to her supervision. Sunstorm and Moonfire met privately with Anna and convinced her of the need for her to follow procedures and tactics. Anna agreed to abide by her orders during standard assaults against Council operations, while it was also agreed that in the future, she and the other Peacebringers who had similar intentions would be dispatched mainly against shard-enhanced soldiers, who could not be rehabilitated.
