History

Jennifer Steele was the daughter of Wendy and Jeffrey Steele, who were both ordinary citizens of Paragon City. Wendy was a stay-at-home mother who looked after both Jennifer and her younger brother, Tyler, as best as she could. Jeffrey Steele was an employee of Portal Corps and a scientist whose specialised areas include astrophysics and chemistry. Their lives would be temporarily changed when, at the age of 13, their daughter would start glowing for no apparent reason. Using some of his contacts in the science department, Jeffrey had Jennifer looked at and it was soon determined that she was a mutant. It was only two years after this that her brother, Tyler, also manifested his own set of powers.

Insisting that she attend her own school, Jennifer tried her best to fit in, but uncontrollable displays of her powers, such as high degrees of illumination, made her the subject of often cruel and vicious bullying. Against her insistence, her parents had Jennifer removed from the school when she was 15, along with her brother, and enrolled them in a school for gifted youngsters. It was there that Jennifer learned to control her abilities under the tutelage of a mutant named Professor Light, as well as finish her studies.

Her time at this school led her to become interested in science, in particular, with genetic mutations and how they function. She graduated from school and was accepted into the University of Croatoa to study medicine, specialising in genetics. Four years into her course, and with occasional mentoring from Professor Light, Jennifer went public as a hero, deciding it was time to help the citizens of Paragon. She felt she had an obligation to the people of the city she grew up in and wanted to do everything in her power to help keep it safe.

Juggling hero work and her studies, Jennifer gained experience working with other heroes in this time. Sometimes for only one mission, sometimes for days at a time, however she learned how her powers could be utilised in a group setting. Her past experience from school also caused her to strive to be the best possible role model she could be for children, which often times caused her to be excluded from social activities that her other heroic counterparts would engage in, like long drinking sessions at the D and even having a relationship.

Pouring herself into her studies and her university studies, Jennifer graduated from Croatoa university with her degree in genetics four years later. However, she decided that she would like to continue to study and specialise in genetic mutations, so she applied to do her doctorate in Steel Canyon. Two years later she would complete her doctorate and begin working in a laboratory with genetic mutations of all kinds, understanding the complexities behind the myriad of powers presented by the 'homo superior' race.

Another two years after that, she began to feel that she needed to do more for the city than simply protect it from the Rikti and other menaces, although that was still important to her. She decided that using her knowledge of genetic mutations and seeing the ever increasing influx of mutations amongst humans she would like to teach and guide this new generation in what could often be a difficult time. So she currently works with the group New Age Mutants as a probationary mentor, however, she hopes that if she continues to apply herself well that the position will become permanent.

Powers and Abilities

Powers

Light Generation and Manipulation: ability to manipulate and generate light for a variety of purposes.

• Light flashes: Refrax is able to generate blinding flashes of light, but has such control that she can choose to affect only certain targets in an area of effect.
• Light blasts: Jennifer is able to layer light as heat energy onto a target causing searing pain.
• Flight: Refrax is able to fly by riding light waves.
• Illusion Casting: Jennifer is able to refract light waves to construct images that have 'hard light' properties, dealing very real damage to organic material.
• Invisibility: By a simple act of concentration, she can cause all wavelengths of visible, infrared, and ultraviolet light to bend around her without distortion; she also somehow directs enough undistorted light to her eyes to retain her full range of vision while invisible. An observer, unaware of the peculiar path light takes around her body, would have the sensation of seeing through her. Refrax can also mentally bend light in order to render other people or objects invisible.

Living Light Generation: Jennifer generates a form of 'living light' which is actually lifeforce. She produces much more than normal humans do which grants her a limited 'healing' ability, the full range of which is not yet fully known.

• Living Light Detoxification: Jennifer's energy can 'purge' a person, removing toxins, drugs etc.
• Living Light Healing: Refrax is able to manipulate her light force to heal wounds in others. She has used her powers to revive a completely incapacitated hero, regenerated tissue damage, repaired small and large physical damage, restored people from fatigue and even mentally rejuvenated people who were stunned, disoriented, confused or suffered some other mental trauma.
• Living Light Boosts: Refrax's light force has been used to increase another heroes ability to withstand blows and also increased their strength, endurance and durability.
