Youth

"My childhood wasn't anything exceptional until the Arbiters got ahold of me, really. I was just a kid, playing with his little Lord Recluse Action figure and soaking up all the knowledge they force-fed me like a sponge. I was just too young to know any better."

Mark Brown was born on the Rogue Islands. According to records, his father was killed three months before Mark was born, and his mother died due to comoplications from poor health care after child birth. He was raised in a government orphanage located in Grandville, a facility which, unlike many American orphanages, was well-funded. Children there were given the best medical care, clean clothes, and one seemingly affectionate "Proctor" for every ten boys or girls. Mark was a happy, bright child with a talent for applying what he learned and leading others.

Unfortunately, being bright, charismatic, and capable of utilizing resources are all traits looked for in potential Arbiters. Mark was a perfect candidate for training.

Mark was taken from his Orphanage three days before his ninth birthday, and the next seven years of his life were consumed by indoctrination and specialized training. Due to his personality profile, his education placed great emphasis on military tactics and psychology alongside general studies equivalent to graduate-level courses. In other words, he was to be used as a military officer, a leader of men and machines. To the gentle-hearted Mark, those years were a nightmare.

Rebellion

"It didn't take much for me to hate Arachnos after they took me away. I was smart enough to know that what they were teaching me was for their good, not mine, and I didn't like it. The only way to escape, though, was to make myself even more like them."

By age thirteen, Mark was an exceptional student with impeccable behavior, or at least he seemed that way. In truth, he was utilizing his skills to coerce his peers into fighting back, one part of a forming escape plan. He began tricking others into getting themselves into trouble, in order to give them a base of resentment which he could manipulate to his own ends. He eventually formed his own gang, the Knots, a pun on the term "Have-Nots" and a reference to the way they were being treated. His gang committed petty thefts (incinerated immediately in order to remove trace evidence), acts of vandalism (never in Mark's hand, or course), and even managed to construct a system of tunnels designed by Mark for moving about undetected.

After the construction of the majority of the tunnels, Mark ordered the gang to disperse, claiming that he had been having second thoughts, that they should all be grateful for their coming roles in society, and that their current hardships were a small price to pay for the defense and expansion of their home. It was tripe, but indoctrination often is. To his disgust, he'd made patriots of them again, made them servants of Lord Recluse, just for the chance that he could escape the same fate.

The tunnels were they key to his plan. They ran near a communications relay that he managed to tap into, and also had a secret tunnel he'd constructed himself which led out near the docks. Three years after the completion of the tunnels, he used his carefully created academics record (true, though unofficial), along with "appropriated" funds, to apply for and receive a full scholarship to Paragon University. By age 18, he'd escaped from the Rogue Isle, leaving his peers behind to enroll in the military as Arachnos soldiers.

Freedom

"Ahh, College. Those were the best days of my life, so far. I got to rediscover who I was, deprogram myself, meet new people without automatically assigning value to them. I became HUMAN again. And the parties were awesome."

"I was smart enough by then to breeze through everything except the sections on ethics. Considering where I went to school, that's not surprising, is it?

Mark's guilt couldn't hold him down for long. His advanced education left him a lot of time for self-exploration and socialization. He tried his hand at just about everything, worked lots of odd jobs, did whatever he could to experience life as a young man in his prime, good and bad, so that he could, in his opinion, catch up to the rest of the world and become a real human being. He decided to major in Political Science, and planned on going on to become an activist who would bring world attention to the plight of those living under Recluse's heel.

He had his whole life planned out, on his own terms, and he was as happy as he'd ever been.

Second Rikti War and Beyond

"There was no way to predict what happened to me that day, really. It was an accident, and that crap happens to people for no reason whatsoever. Truth be told, though, I sometimes can't shake the feeling that I was MEANT to have these powers, like the universe was telling me that my duty is to fight."

Mark was a Junior in college by the time the second Rikti War started, and was working as a janitor in a Crey medical supply building. One of the first bombing runs of the war dropped a dud that crashed through the building where he was working, collapsing rubble onto Mark and eventually rolling right and shifting in the unsteady rubble until he was trapped underneath it. For nearly a week, he was irradiated by the malfunctioning bomb, surviving by drinking water that trickled down through the filth and dirt of the collapsed building above him. Eventualy, he decided to put all of his energy into one last attempt to free himself, before he was too weak from lack of nourishment or medical care to do anything but waste away.

He was stunned when his last push resulted in the bomb being knocked off of him by a blast of energy from his own hands, which destabilized the remaining story floor above him.

Apparently, the radiation from the malfunctioning bomb, combined with whatever trace minerals and bacteria were in that water he'd been drinking, resulted in a mutation that gave him the ability to absorb, generate, and manipulate energy. His Arbiter training took over, and he figured out as swiftly as he could how to tap into his energy. Feeling the draining effects of using these unknown powers, he decided to release them all at once in a gigantic signal flare, hoping that rescue might come and dig him out before he died or the walls collapsed around him.

He fired...

And woke up five days later in the hospital. He was told he'd been found floating unconscious above a crater where the top of a building used to be.

He was hospitalized until just after the war came under control, at which time he went back to school and spent his spare time working with Hero Corps to refine his powers. He was given a suit with wired-in Rikti technology, small electromagnetic "Conduction Lines" which allowed him to direct his power more easily.

Powers

Rogue Guard's exposure to a malfunctioning Rikti bomb over a prolonged period of time caused his body to mutate in order to survive, granting his the power to absorb energy in the atmosphere into his body and use it in various ways. When his powers are active, Rogue Guard flows lower levels of energy throughout his body, using it to enhance his physical abilities above the typical human norm. His energies take on different colors depending on the presence of magnetic fields, particularly those in his costumes. He is currently, however, still learning how to channel his energies for combat. While his current level of power is stable, he claims that his energy is not as focused as he would like it to be.

Energy Blasts

Rogue Guard's power discharge and manipulate energy in various forms is not yet mastered. His control is limited to an area roughly 80 away. Any farther, and his energy blasts begin to disperse or explode. Generally speaking, the closer he is to the target, the more concentrated his power is. Currently, he's learned a few different ways to shape his power in order for it to be effective:

Energy Blasts - Throw away shots, these bolts of force are capable of disrupting nerves and electrical equipment. These blasts are the easiest, and are most often used against weaker enemies. Their damage is cumulative, however, and they shouldn't be taken lightly.

Eye Beams - Using the lens of the eye as a focus, Rogue Guard fires energy beams capable of burning through solid matter. The drawback of these blasts, however, is that the light passing through the lens of the eye blinds him while they are in use, making them less accurate than one would expect against a target moving unpredictably. Low levels of energy in the eye, however, have an enhancing effect, just like running his energy through the rest of his body when in combat.

Energy Waves - These shots are amongst his most powerful, but they require a great deal of energy. A directed wave can be fired from range and has enough kinetic force behind it to physically knock enemies flying. A directionless wave pulsing from his own body deals more cumulative damage, having a more gradual effect, but requiring less energy to perform.

Energy Compression - Compressed energy spheres are Rogue Guard's most versatile weapon. In melee, they can be used to direct incredible amounts of force though his fists, disrupting the nervous system or electronics with ease while dealing devestating amounts of damage. At range, compressed energy spheres can be thrown like bombs, to explode on contact, or fired like an energy blast over short distances for similiar effects to their use in melee.

Flight

Using his powers to fly came naturally to Rogue Guard. He is a born flier, and seems to prefer fighting in the air when possible. Some of his uniforms have heavily augmented conductive fields near his feet, making flight use nearly none of his concentration at all, leaving room for him to focus on combat. However, he tends not to use these enhancements when undergoing more covert operations due to the extremely bright energy trail they leave in their wake while he uses them.

Force Fields

Rogue Guard has begun training himself in the use of his power for creating force fields. By generating a charged particle field orbitting his body at high velocities, a near-impenetrable force field is created which knocks incoming attacks off their course like a pebble caught in a tornado. He is also considering other uses for this high velocity rotation technique, such as utilizing it in an energy blast.
