Jargo Darkly AKA Shadowcastar

General

Shadowcastar is able to manipulate shadows in a variety of ways, crafting them into solid form or using them as weapons. Exactly how he does this is currently unknown, although it is speculated that he somehow draws negative energy from an unknown dimension, the border of which exists between our world and darkness.

Mutant Powers

Shadowcastar can launch projectiles of pure shadow charged with negative energy at any target. The overall kinetic impact is devastating, but in addition to this the effects of the negative energy tend to linger, causing further damage at the molecular level. Living targets also tend to become disorientated in various ways after being on the receiving end of one of his shadow-bolts, further weakening their offensive abilities and giving Shadowcastar the advantage in a confrontation.

He can also mold shadows into various forms that are substantial and can retain their shape. He can hold targets in place with dark tentacles that spring from nearby shadows and recently has gained the ability to sustain some crafted shadows in the sunlight for extended periods of time, fashioning them into the dark wings he uses to fly.

Shadowcastar's powers are weakened in bright light but particularly ultraviolet light and as a result of this he tends to conduct all operations at night whenever possible.

Background

Jargo Darkly is the result of a one night stand his mother Jannis Darkly had with a man she had never met before. The identity of Jargo's biological father is unknown as of the last update on this case file. Being part of an ultra-conservative family she married a childhood friend and high school sweetheart Chuck Darkly shortly after discovering that she was pregnant hoping to hide her shame from her parents. Chuck didn’t know that the child wasn’t his, but he began to grow suspicious when his son was born two months early fully developed and healthy and with a head full of golden blond hair, which was a trait atypical of both sides of the family.

Jargo was a normal child although it is reported by his grade school teacher that he tended to be quiet and withdrawn. At home Jargo was verbally abused and would often be harshly punished by his father for minor offenses. His mother never defended him and as a result he would spend as much of his time away from home as possible, wandering through the woods or reading at the local library. He was forced by his parents to attend church and bible camp although he was secretly an atheist. This along with his fathers extreme right wing views and verbal/psychological abuse at home made Jargo grow resentful towards authority and he began to harbor a deep anger against anything he considered to be unfair or oppressive; traits which would manifest themselves destructively later in his life.

October 8th - Jargo was playing video games in his room when his father who was passing by noticed that all the shadows being cast from the window and a lamp in the corner were all converging directly on his son, seeming breaking the laws of physics. That day there was a great deal of commotion in the house. Chuck ordered Jargo to stop doing whatever it was he was doing but Jargo, terrified and having no idea what was happening to his body, was unable to comply. Exactly what transpired that evening is unknown, but Jargo left his house sometime after midnight, homeless at the age of 14.

Jargo stopped going to school and spent his days in the library, reading and keeping himself warm during the cold winter months. [The books Jargo read during this period are particularity interesting in light of his future actions. Please see attachment A for a list.] In the evening he would spend the night over at his friend’s houses, their parents never having any idea that he actually had no home to go back to. When he couldn’t spend the night with his friends he slept in a tent in the woods buried under blankets that his friends had smuggled out of their houses for him.

Through trial and error Jargo began to gain control over his powers, manipulating shadows to move objects across the floor and to rise up from the ground to take on various shapes much to the delight of his friends. That summer he used his powers to break into the house of an affluent family that was on vacation and him and his friends vandalized the property, stole jewelry, cash, a VCR, a CD player and several dozen CD's. This was his first known criminal action, although on record the break-in is listed as unsolved.

By the time autumn had rolled around again Jargo was using his powers for a variety of small time criminal activities around the town and he had developed a reputation for himself as a public nuisance. He grew bolder by the day and began make comments to his friends that he was superior over all the “normal” people. After he returned to his camp site one evening to find it being raided by the local sheriffs he decided that it was time to move on to bigger and better things.

October 18th - For the first time in over a year Jargo returned home. He viciously assaulted his father with his maturing powers and then tied both him and his mother up back to back with duct tape, leaving them helpless on the kitchen floor. He tortured Mr. Darkly into giving him the pin number to his atm card and the code to the house safe. Then he stole their car and headed towards Paragon city. His parents were not found until three days later by a friend of the family, still on the floor and suffering from dehydration.

Paragon City

When Jargo arrived in Paragon he attempted to make contact with the local criminal underground and he was almost immediately robbed of everything he had by another young super powered criminal. Discouraged, he spent the next two years living in homeless shelters and getting his meals from soup kitchens. He was “discovered” by a fellow mutant who went by the name Fire Bomb, an old timer who had been a political activist in the 60’s and 70’s. [Review Harry Mitchel AKA Fire Bombs case file here.]

Fire Bomb recruited Jargo into his paramilitary organization of anti-government, anti-corporation and anti-human extremists giving the young mutant the purpose and direction that had been missing from his life. Jargo, now calling himself Shadowcastar, looked to Fire Bomb as the father figure he never had and his powers developed quickly under the tutelage of the old mutant. Shadowcastar became a loyal follower and an adherent believer of Fire Bomb’s radical philosophies and despite his young age became a top lieutenant in what Fire Bomb was now calling “Mutant Underground”. They embarked on a rampage, destroying millions of dollars worth of government and public property in high profile acts of sabotage and terrorism. As the mutant underground began to grow they were made a top priority by Paragon city law officials and on an early December they raided the Undergrounds’ secret base, acting on an anonymous tip. The fighting was intense and there were heavy casualties on both sides including Fire Bomb who shot in the head and died instantly.

The survivors were rounded up and all sentenced to life in prison. Jargo was kept in a specially designed prison cell that surrounded him on all sides with bright lighting so that no shadow large enough for Jargo to work with could be cast. As Shadowcastar’s powers had matured and his affinity towards whatever dark-dimension he drew his powers from had grown closer his entire physiology had changed. Now bright light caused him pain and separation from the darkness left him weak and lethargic.

If it wasn’t for the now famous mass prison break staged by the criminal mastermind Lord Recluse, it's possible that Jargo would have simply wasted away in jail. A free man, Shadowcastar was again without direction but now he was stronger, smarter and more confident. After a year of relevantly no activity Shadowcastar began a string of daring bank robberies, using the funds he gathered to have the light power armor suit he currently wears constructed.

While he seems to be primarily focused on making money at this time it is not known whether this is simply for the accumulation of personal wealth or for some other purpose. In addition to robbery, extortion and blackmail he is known to intervene in situations he believes support his radical cause regardless of reward.

Last known location: Spotted on a Port Oaks security camera.

Group Affiliations – Formally a lieutenant in the Mutant Underground, there has been no indication that this terrorist group has become active again. Currently Shadowcastar is believed to be a free agent and acting on his own accord.

Current Status – Jargo Darkly is considered to be an extremely dangerous super-powered villain and should not be approached without sufficient back up per instruction on super villains JR-45675. Little is known about the current extent of his powers post prison break so law enforcement personnel should be aware that all of his mutant abilities may not be mentioned in this file. Extreme caution is advised.

There were sirens outside now; back up had arrived. No matter, the figure had completed what it had set out to do. It made its way to the rear exit of the building and slipped quietly into the night.
