Character History

On the surface, the planet Kil'drothu is truly a place a wonder. Vast meadows of indigo grasses, dotted with groves of silver trees glow luminously under the light of the six moons orbiting the planet. Crystalline mountain peaks reach out to caress the violet skies and cradle the ever-present stars. The vast cities of the industrious Kil'drothi people are home to marvelous, opulent spires which house great prisms which absorb the moonlight. The light is re-directed to amplify the beauty of the utopian society, shifting in hues for each different lunar phase. When two or more moons align, the world and all of its denizens become even more lively as celestial energies fill them with invigorating forces, which accounts for the longevity of each living being on the planet. Yet this periodic renewal acts much like a perfume, used to mask the true nature of the world.

Kil'drothi children that are born during specific lunar alignments have abnormal genetic make up. Their bodies can absorb energies given off by both organic and synthetic beings. They possess silver-white hair which can reflect iridescent light refractions. These beings are known as the Vaul. Vaul children are taken from their parents, and taught to harness their powers in order to serve as Kil'drothu's peace keepers. While the Kil'drothi society may appear flawless, the Vaul are an ever-present warning used to keep the people in line. Beneath each grand city is the rotten core, serving as the contrast to the world's outlying beauty.

The under-cities of Kil'drothu are little more than massive pits full of ramshackle structures where chaos reigns. Criminals, outcasts, and innocent victims alike band together to fight for survival. Smugglers, outlaws, and pirates from all across the universe trade in the under-cities, as they are forbidden to set foot upon the planet's surface. It is in one of these under-cities that Shiare Dakken Vaul was raised. His family was cast down into the under-city for resisting those who came to claim the boy for his training. His father was murdered by the Vaul, while his mother fled with him into writhing underbelly of the planet. His mother was killed while he only seven years of age. From there he learned how to survive among a band of orphaned children. The wily youth eventually stowed away on board a pirate's starship. The crew kept him on board, where he soon showed a natural affinity for marksmanship. Yet Shiare would soon learn that the Vaul of his home world were searching for him.

Shiare, who took on the name Vaulkan, began bouncing from crew to crew, hiring himself out as a gunner on star ships, and an enforcer on various planets. Eventually, he would be taken in by an eccentric captain who offered no name. "The Cap'n," as he was refered, ran small-time operations alongside the bizzare "Phantom," on their small ship, "The Stygian Harlot." Vaulkan's duration on board the Harlot was his longest, and most prosperous. After repeated success with small-time smuggling rings, the Cap'n set his sights on an Imperial commerce vessel rumored to be transporting a precious cargo in the Arkkatos galaxy. Yet the word had gotten out to far too many ears in the system, and the crew of the Harlot had fallen victim to an Imperial ambush. The Cap'n was killed in the assault, and Vaulkan was rendered unconscious while the ship's damaged AI system blindly set a course and jumped to hyperspace. The next time Vaulkan would open his eyes, he would be on Earth amongst the wreckage of the ship, with Phantom rummaging through the debris, muttering to himself.

Vaulkan and Phantomania
He found an unlikely home in Paragon City, fitting in easily with the bizzare "heroes" the Earth had to offer. As he learned the rules of the game, Vaulkan would make a name for himself as a crime fighter, using the experiences of his days as an outlaw to outmaneuver the petty crooks inhabiting the city. Though he enjoys his new profession, Vaulkan is constantly on the look-out for signs of the Vaul of his home world, who still search for the boy that narrowly escaped the clutches of a wretched fate.

The Star Emperium

Not long after making a name as an up-and-coming hero in the Streets of Paragon City, Vaulkan, alongside Phantom (now known as Phantomania), crossed paths with Space-Girl. The two were soon inducted into the ranks of the The Star Emperium, which at the time, served as a safe haven for aliens on Earth.

Powers

Like all of his kind, Vaulkan possesses the ability to draw ambient energies into his body. The absorbed forces can be redirected as bursts of raw energy, or spread throughout the body to augment physical attacks. The powers can also be amplified, though only periodically, as repeated strain is often risky. With the mastery of his powers, Vaulkan has learned how to fly, as well as focusing the energies to form a deflective field around him.

Weaknesses

When one of the Vaul absorbs too much energy for their body to handle, they enter a dangerously volatile state. They lose the ability to absorb energy properly, and, within an indeterminate amount of time, will involuntarily unleash the energies stored within them, resulting in a cataclysmic explosion.

Vaulkan also possesses a fear of cybernetic constructs. The cause of this phobia is unknown.

Personality

Vaulkan typically comes across as being very nonchalant. He can often be seen flashing a crooked grin while tossing a friendly jibe at one of his peers. Having spent so many years amongst the dregs of the universe has given him something of a rogue-ish demeanor. Though at the core, Vaulkan is trustworthy, and utterly loyal to his friends. His speech patterns are a bit rough, as he lacks any formal education.

Vaulkan lives his life in a perpetual state of paranoia, though none would ever guess as much by his demeanor. Knowing that the Vaul of his home world are searching for him weighs heavily on his mind, as he's heard several tales of a properly trained Vaul's powers.
