Mankind has wondered for eons if we have existed; if the things they read about in ancient tomes was indeed more than myth. Well, there was a time when Atlantis was once a part of the surface world...

The continent of Atlantis was said to be amidst the center of the Atlantic Ocean. A place flowing with lush tropical vegetation and wildlife, Atlantis was every human's vision of a utopia. The endless greenery and infinite supply of food available to the people on the continent showed those fortunate enough to visit that Atlantis was indeed a place favored by the gods. The Atlantean natives, men and women of many shades and physiques, were worshipers of the god of the sea, Poseidon. To them, it was Poseidon who provided for them, and Poseidon who protected them. In exchange for such love, they built an immaculate city in his honor.

Atlantis was a city built upon love and peace. There was no war, there was no crime, there was no hatred. Visitors to the island were greeted with open arms. They were not questioned as to why they had come. To the Atlanteans, they were friends simply stopping by. "The Shining City" the Greeks called it. This was in reference to the intricately designed cities of marble, emerald and gold. It was said that while on the seas at high noon, Atlantis shone like a star on the horizon. News of the beauty of Atlantis traveled far and wide and soon, more ships began to come to Atlantean shores. Being of a curious nature, the Atlanteans learned much from the visiting cultures who came to their island.

But, of course, not everyone who comes to Atlantis, comes in peace. The tribe's name was lost to the sands of time, but the deed was never forgotten. When the first ship came, soldiers marched off the gangway with shield and spear in hand. When they were greeted by those who lived on the coast, they demanded gold and emeralds. The Atlanteans did not believe that gold had a value and did not understand why these foreign soldiers were so adamant and rude for wanting it. The Atlanteans were kind enough to supply and even load gold bars onto the ship for their visitors. A young Atlantean girl was standing on the shore, watching as the soldiers began to walk back up the gangway. In her hands she clutched a beautifully sculpted diamond idol of Poseidon. When a soldier demanded she surrender it, she refused. Without a second thought, the soldier cut her down.

"A merciless act, it was. He took his jagged blade and gashed young Aramathea open. Her life spilled from her body in a torrent of crimson unlike anything seen by Atlantean eyes. She died quicker than she could scream, only to have her dearest possession, her god, plucked from her bloody hands. And we, Poseidon's children, could only watch..."

That was the first time a child had ever died on the island of Atlantis. There was no such thing as sickness there. There was no such thing as violence or murder, until that day. Aramathea was buried there on that beach and for many tides, the Atlanteans grieved. Whilst in prayer, a great wind swept over the island. In the distance, ships could be seen...

The Atlanteans watched as the ships drew near, flying the same flag as the one that carried Aramathea's murderer away so long ago. With sheer terror gripping their hearts, The Atlanteans stood at the edge of the beach, silently calling to Poseidon for aid.

"Words could not describe the force with which the island shook. A violent jarring unlike anything seen on this world had caused our island to wrest itself from Gaia's grasp. Suddenly, Zeus's thunderbolts tore open the skies and the rain and wind spurred the sea's wrath. As we watched ships toss and turn, split and capsize, we cheered. Poseidon had saved us..."

The Atlanteans cheered as they watched the ships sink into the deep. It was then that they realized that they too were descending into the abyss. It is said that as water swept across their beautiful land, Poseidon revealed himself to his children. For their faith in him and their benevolence toward others, the Atlanteans were remade into Poseidon's image. As he raised his trident to the skies and water swallowed the island, The Atlanteans breathed in the sea. Their world sank to the bottom of the ocean, and with it, their naivety. Hidden away from the eyes of man, the Atlanteans rebuilt their city in the deep. As they toiled, a mutual bitterness for mankind had arisen among them. They could swim faster than any ship. They could breathe the water. To them, mankind was a primitive, savage race. The Atlanteans decided they would have no further dealings with the surface world. Taking what they learned from various cultures who visited the island, The Atlanteans established their own world beneath the waves.

  • Atlantis sank around 590 B.C.
