Background: Who is Nano Fox?
When Kaila was born, her mother (Lisa Mason) volunteered at the University of Steel Canyon to be a test subject for a new line of technologically-advanced exo-armor suits for the non super-powered guardians of Paragon City. Her husband, Professor Frank Mason, was head of the studies and kept a close eye on his beloved through all of the tests administered. Original trial runs found that the suits were more than capable of performing super-human feats, but quickly drained the test subjects stamina and endurance. Professor Mason discovered that this could be corrected by injecting nanos directly into the subject's bloodstream, which would act as a catalyst for the suit's true design and strength. The injections would not be enough, however. Through constant physical conditioning, through various martial arts and combat fighting, each subject became stronger and more agile.
After five years of vigorous research, the team finally had their dreams realized. There was only one problem: they needed to see how the suits would perform in the field. Their mission was to shut down a small arms group running their entire operation out of a local pawn shop. Optimistic and headstrong, Lisa Mason lead her fellow test subjects on a trial run through King's Row.
The entire mission was a success.
There were no casualties, no civilians injured, and no property damage. This made the sponsors of the program very happy, and so they pushed on to create more suits to test...
After ten years of private lab testing and test runs in the field, the financial sponsors were finally ready to show the public the fruits of their labor. There were ten nano-tech suits created, in all. The operators of the suits created their own team, under the name of N.A.N.O - Neurologically Advanced Nanotech Operatives. Because the suits allowed them complete anonymity, they each took on names of their own. Only the original suits creators, and those involved in the N.A.N.O operation, knew their true identities. Lisa Mason became known as Nano Fox, leader of the N.A.N.O team.
Time and time again, the N.A.N.O team was called into action. Working with fellow heroes, they slowly started pushing back the tidal wave of violence and destruction that is known as Arachnos. It didn't take long before Lord Recluse decided to take action himself. He sent his best soldiers and assassins to ambush the N.A.N.O team. Unbeknownst to them, his target wasn't the entire team, but one in particular. "Cut the head from the snake and the body will crumble..."
Lord Recluse was most satisfied with the efforts of his minions - Nano Fox was slain. He knew that if he could at least get the great and noble Nano Fox, the rest of the team would shatter like fragile glass. He was partially right. However, that one course of action set in motion everything that would transpire after. A man of maniacal logic, he still had yet to see the catastrophic errors of his decision. He would soon discover that mistake the hard way.
Beaten and broken down, the team brought Nano Fox's body back to the University to the Professor. He asked to be alone with his wife while he cleaned her up and prepared her for her funeral. While on a routine visit to see her father, Kaila was mortified at the discovery of her mother's murder. Emotional and furious, she fled the University and left Steel Canyon before her father could tell her what had happened.
After the funeral, her father tried in desperation to send word to her. Each attempt was met with greater despair than the previous attempts. Still, he did not give up hope. Finally, after a couple years had passed, Kaila had returned home. She and her father spoke at great lengths about her sabbatical, missing her mother's funeral, but most of all.. who murdered her mother.
Where overwhelming sadness and hatred once filled her heart, a new passion arose. Adamant about defeating the tyranny of Arachnos, and Lord Recluse himself, she went through the same rigorous training her mother endured. In peak condition, she would seek out the other members of the team and forge a new allegiance with allies old and new. With her father's guidance, as reluctant as he was to do so, he helped her take on the identity her mother once proudly donned. To wear the armor of a fallen hero.. of her beloved mother. To become something more than she ever thought she could be. Thus, Nano Fox was reborn...
