Soul Thief
From Unofficial Handbook of the Virtue Universe
Soul Thief is a level 50 Ice Blast/Dark Miasma corruptor and is a long-time member of Anathema. Very few of Thief's powers are originally her own. The ice manipulation, the ability to terrify someone, or the capacity to heal her allies are all examples of skills she "learned" from other metapowered beings. The source of Thief's real power is her flexible genetic structure. Essentially, she is able to "read" someone's brain when they're using a power, and her body can then interpret those signals into a different kind of energy. Once that step has been accomplished, her DNA will rewrite itself in a way that grants her a new ability. The process is dangerous, uncertain, and generally painful. There also seems to be a limit to how much she is able to learn and how quickly she can repeat the process. Multiple side effects result from genetic restructuring, including the accumulation of a thick, tar-like substance in her nervous system. Thief has characterized this theft of power as stealing one's life force or soul, but generally speaking she limits how invasive the process is. Most of the people who have served as genetic models for Thief have recovered just fine. However, there have been times when her "reading" of someone's metapowers has resulted in the other person's death. Particularly before she had a better grasp on how to control the process.
