Now this is a cool character. Reminds me of the book "American Gods" by Neil Gaiman. -- Soul Train 14:17, 16 June 2007 (MST)
- Thanks! I thought Knight Rain would evoke that feel more, plus having a neat 70s music reference to him.--Talen Lee 16:43, 16 June 2007 (MST)
Hey love, WRT this: "Cause seasickness, tinnitis, or perform any other subtle manipulation of sound". Tinnitus (in this context) is actually caused by exposure to loud sounds - it's not a subtle thing, but rather a case of enough brute force to injure the ear. It's pretty weird that Harm wouldn't be able to cause it, if he can generate music at any decent volume, right? --Fox Lee 16:57, 9 July 2007 (MST)
- Hm, you're right. I was thinking about using subtle sound wave manipulation to damage the cochlea and thereby inflict tinnitis without the obvious cause, but he could indeed inflict tinnitis, simply by brute-forcing his way into it. Much like the difference between applying pressure to an artery in the brain and simply smashing the person's head open. The important thing is that his 'sonic resonance' is musical magic, not the kind of sonic control you actually get from sci-fi style superheroes. - Talen Ninja
Thought: After searching Virtueverse, I wasn't able to find a single character who was deaf. This surprised me! Still, if anyone reads this... and has a character who is deaf... drop me a line, I had an idea for something that involved Harlem. - Talen.
- I HAD one.... she got baleeted. She was an up-and-coming rock star who'd been subjected to abnormally high levels of sound and electricity when a villain had secretly rewired her band's amplifier stacks. She was a sonic/elec blaster, and was permanently deaf from the incident. If anyone wants to run with the concept of Amplified Rockstar (or whatever other name you feel would fit) have fun with it. So this is where he turned up. I'll make a note on the Row's page. --Megajoule 17:53, 13 October 2010 (CDT)
Possible Musical References
Harlem might enjoy the following bands (songs):
- Freestylers (Weekend Song, Freestyle Noize, We Rock Hard)
- Big Audio Dynamite / The Clash
- Henry Rollins Band (Shine)
- Black Rebel Motorcycle Club (Whatever Happened to my Rock and Roll?)
- Frank Zappa (Trouble Every Day) -- anyone who's grown up in a violence-ridden barrio neighborhood needs to listen to this song
-- Soul Train 08:20, 6 September 2007 (MST)
- Anything Zappa is fine. Pretty much. Guy was one of the two major musical geniuses I compare Harlem too. I know the Clash, and quite like 'em. If I was going to whip a list off the top of my head...
- Less Than Jake (Suburban Myth, Malt Liquor Tastes Better When You Have Problems, Look What Happened)
- Five Iron Frenzy (See the Flames Begin To Crawl, It Was Beautiful, Cannonball, Kamikaze, 451)
- The Mighty Mighty Bosstones (Numbered Days, Nevermind Me, Someday I Suppose)
- John Mellencamp (So much stuff, probably too much to count)
- Captain Tractor (Happy to Be Unhappy, Here We Go Again, Summer Of Our Discontent)
- The Eagles (Journey of the Sorceror, on its own, is enough of a reason, but add in Life's Been Good, One Day At A Time, New York Minute)
- And of course, there's all the stuff from the CD, which includes Rilo Kiley and Louis Armstrong. The thing is, Harlem has very little musical exposure. Everything he's heard he's heard from minimal exposure. Harlem loves music; it's really quite telling, in how he acts and reacts to musicians. Every piano holds a bit of music and he just has to listen to it.
- ... Why the HELL don't I have Nevermind Me as one of his themes!? --Talen Lee 16:12, 6 September 2007 (MST)
- Dude, you wanna talk about the Eagles?
- I was born here in the city
- With my back against the wall
- Nothing grows, and life ain’t very pretty
- No one’s there to catch you when you fall
- I was born here in the city
- Even better:
- The sun goes down, the night rolls in
- You can feel it starting all over again
- The moon comes up, and the music calls
- You're getting tired of staring at the same four walls
- The sun goes down, the night rolls in
- Nobody knows where you're going
- Nobody cares where you've been
- Nobody knows where you're going
- You were born in the city
- Concrete under your feet
- It's in your blood, its in your moves
- You're a man of the street
- You were born in the city
- I think I can claim a quantity of "win" for that :D --Fox Lee 17:20, 6 September 2007 (MST)
- Yes, you may. -- Soul Train 23:17, 6 September 2007 (MST)
