- But more wonderful than the lore of old men and the lore of books is the secret lore of ocean.
- - H.P. Lovecraft, "The White Ship"
Character
Kai is an easygoing young man with a quiet, reflective side. Growing up in many different cultures meant he has learned a variety of different presentations for politeness - which he usually tries to keep simple. Rather than focus on rituals, he looks people in the eye, smiles when he means it, and tries to be complimentary - if a bit naughty. With his priest father as a guide, he spent most of his adolescence avoiding publically recognising 'sinful' things. Now that he's independent, he's taken to being a little more willing to mention such things, occasionally making a lewd quip or two.
Kai takes promises very seriously. He will only offer them rarely, and fulfill them every time.
Perhaps as a result of growing up near the ocean no matter where he lived, Kai is interested in swimming, surfing, and boating. While no an avid fisherman, he does quite like seafood and the food that he associates with beaches. A young man of his frame and style would have spent quite a bit of that time chasing girls, but Kai had not the option, meaning he had a lot of hobbies growing up, including learning musical instruments[1], dance, and fire-twirling.
Kai isn't good at sharing his problems. Rather than ask his friends for help, he will deflect discussion from what's going wrong in his life, and try to come up with ways to solve it on his own.
Powers
Kai has supernatural powers derived from a promise his grandfather made to a lost and forgotten deity, the goddess who eventually became Kai's mother. These powers stem from an ocean-bound storm goddess. Kai's soul is swaddled in the energies of the storm, surrounded by a crackling sphere of lightning, harsh winds that buffet those around him and push projectiles aside and away from his body.
In addition to the storm, there is the weapon Kai can shape out of the air; an enormous broadsword-like line of ice, water and lightning, constantly crackling, bursting and reforming. This weapon wields like a sword and reforms and batters like a hammer, crashing and crushing his opponents, knocking them like bowling pins. It's not a weapon gifted to finesse, but it does let Kai more or less rule a room with a single sweep.
Kai is the only worshipper and the only avatar of this storm god, some entity that has been forgotten by the ages. Much like others who champion forgotten deities, Kai has become a vessel for every bit of power that the deity can offer. Since he is the avatar for that deity, as long as people believe in Kai, that deity gains some power, which in turn, is gifted to Kai.
Building a reputation, fame and renown is therefore important to Kai. In the Rogue Isles, nobody trusts a person's motivations, and since he was stranded there, his attempts to fight for people he deals with have been met with doubt and fear. Cautiously, he's trying to build a reputation, and trying to do something good, in a bad place like the Rogue Isles.

RP Notes
- Kai doesn't have an accent you'd probably recognise; thanks to his moving youth, from place to place, he never developed a 'normal' accent to any particular location. Wherever he is, he sounds foreign[2].
- Kai is meant to be a demigod entity like Hercules or Achilles, to evoke classic part-god characters, a Hero in the old sense of a person of such a scope that he does what he chooses.
Themes
The central theme of Kai's story is sacrifice. The story behind Kai is that of a grandfather's legacy, a father's denial, and a lifetime spent sacrificing good things for things that were perceived as better. Thanks to his decentralised life, with only his (small) family as constants, Kai has seen a great amount of the world, but not without sacrifice. And Kai himself is a sacrifice - the promise made by his grandfather to the deity that rescued him, and subsequently shaped his grandson.
Trivia
- Kai's original incarnation took three weeks to go from 1-20 after Going Rogue's launch to go Hero.
- Kai's second incarnation took two weeks to go from 1-50.
