Version 1. Further details on powers and equipment to come real soon now. --Sagaril 16:10, 24 June 2008 (MST)

History

For about three decades, Douglas Newport worked as a lab assistant for various scientific and technological firms, includng big corporations like Portacio Industries, the Portal Corporation and the like, smaller ones, most of which have been bought out by Crey by now, and even did some work for SERAPH at one point. He resisted promotion for many reasons, not the least of which was because lab assistants generally aren't noticed much; they're more like scenery than anything else, which has a whole slew of benefits.

This eventually culminated in a job with an obscure FBSA contractor working on a Shift derivative which would give the recipient the psychic powers of a Lost Pariah without, for instance, the physical mutation or mind-warping the regular Shift invokes. The Rikti apparently took exception to this, as when the serum had reached the point where a human test subject was needed (who was found, and, in spite of tradition, a well-paid volunteer who was fully aware of the risks involved) they attacked the lab in which the serum was being developed. It has often been remarked by more genre savvy heroes that researchers in Paragon and the Rogue Isles seem to have trouble keeping backups of important data, such as formulae for superpower-inducing drugs. This was, in fact, the case, and all the Rikti had to do to force the developers to start over was destroy the single computer on which the formula was kept, and the single phial of the serum itself.

This would have worked perfectly, and nearly did; they destroyed the computer, but Douglas, having lived in Paragon City most his life, and knowing how these things always go, downed the serum himself when the alarm was raised, expecting to spontaneously manifest the aforementioned psychic powers. He didn't, and was captured by the Rikti along with several of the other researchers and taken to a base in an absurdly spacious section of the sewers, where he stood in a corner being terrorized by a pair of their soldiers until some hero came and rescued him and the others, which fortunately didn't take long.

His powers did manifest eventually, however. It started with minor telekinesis - making his coffee with his mind, manipulating the television remote remotely - and soon after that, he found he could give people headaches, or make them drowsy, by "shooting negative vibes" at them as well. It wasn't long before he also found he could distort space and time in some very dubious ways, such as by sucking the physical energy out of people and converting it into restorative waves, similar to those generated by the heroes known as 'empaths.'

He briefly considered using his newfound powers to pick up super-powered chicks rather than perfom menial tasks for himself, but figured that he was probably too old for most of Paragon City's heroines anyway and decided to become a superhero himself. He used his connections to aquire a ballistic-armor exoskeleton, headed over to City Hall to register, and the rest is history.
