Preface:

This was the first character I created the day the game went live on April 28, 2004. It was essentially just a reroll of the toon I was playing during the open beta testing… same name and all. However, he didn't reach Level 50 until late August 2008. The reasons for this are two-fold:

  1. Until now, I have been on-and-off the game several times for varying periods of time, the longest being just before i9 came out until mid-August of 2008. Real life can be a bitch sometimes…
  2. Even when my account's active, I have a serious case of Alt-itis. I have a tendency, when I come up with a cool idea for a toon, to go and make it right then and play it for a while. This is NOT conducive to getting a main leveled…
Currently, I don't play him as often as I used to, as I'm working on getting my Villain-side main to Level 50. Just the bi-weekly Hami raid that VirtueUnited organizes (chat channel VU2008, if you don't know & are interested) and other, likewise occasions that peak my interest. But he's still #1 in my heart…

Origin

Jake Harris was your typical Paragon Cab Co. taxi driver, when, one day, he picked up a mysteriously garbed & hooded passenger with an odd voice that gave no clue to the sex or even species of him/her/it's self. Things like this were not uncommon, though, in Paragon City, the so-called "City of Heroes", so Jake didn't think much of it. Besides, it made his head hurt too much to wonder about such things, as they were beyond his ken, even though having been born & raised in Paragon City. After dropping off this strange being at the requested destination, he noticed that the passenger had left behind a small, ornate box. He rolled down the window to shout at the passenger, "Hey! You left...", but he/she/it was nowhere to be seen. So he retrieved the box from the back & continued on with his shift, intending to put it in the lost & found box back at Dispatch when he finished for the day.

When there was a lull in the day & he got bored at the stand, he got curious about what was in the box, so he opened it. He found a fist-sized, red glowing gem that was ornately cut. He went to pick it up to examine it, but as soon as he touched it, a strange thing happened. The gem stopped glowing, but he started to glow red himself! And then, he started to grow… grow to an enormous size. If he hadn't quickly deboarded the cab, he would have destroyed it from the inside out, as he grew to the dimensions of the cab itself. He also seemed to take on the density of the steel used in the manufacture of the cab, making him highly resistant to normal injury. This also gave him a proportionate strength.

While for anyone else having an experience like this would have come as a great shock, Jake just took it in stride. Growing up in Paragon City tends to jade you a bit on the incredible after having witnessed it over & over again. He also knew that with this new-found power, he needed to use it for the good of all mankind. He immediately went to City Hall and registered himself as a superhero, hoping that one more hero might save someone else from the grief that he experienced when his parents were killed when the apartment building they lived in was destroyed by a Rikti bomb in the first Invasion. Now, as "The Mystic Cabbie", he works to make Paragon City a safer place to live for the present & the future. He believes his parents would be proud of him for that…
