Appearance

Eight solid feet tall and clad in an articulated shell of living adamantine, Nephilim-01 is an imposing figure. His shape and posture are vaguely inhuman, as the curve of his spine gives him a slightly hunched over posture, and his limbs are a little too long to be proportionally normal. Underneath his armor his skin is nearly translucent, and a casual observer can make out the shapes of muscles and blood vessels underneath the thin covering.

His adamantine shell, referred to as his Exodermis, is completely form fitting, with sections sliding over each other at the joints to prevent any gaps in the protection it provides, yet can be removed piece by piece. The armor tends to have a few recent scrapes and gouges across it, but even they seem old and scarred, fading away as time passes and the armor heals the damaged areas. When separated from him, the armor remains warm to the touch, but within twenty four hours will cool, lose its luster, and crumble away into dust. Sections of the armor lost in this way regenerate over time, so that he is never permanently without his protection. When he is angered, across his entirety the edges and joints of his Exodermis become ridged and sharpened, making his whole body capable of serving as a weapon when necessary.

Nephilim's head is the most inhuman part of his body. Behind the glasteel eyeplates of his helm, his eyes are a bright green, which start to glow when he is emotionally agitated. The helm itself is form fitting, like the rest of his armor. His eyes are set forward in his head, providing the binocular vision of a predator. Small, angled slits, grown in a way to prevent harmful objects from slipping through, are situated in front of each of his four nostrils, two above the level of his eyes and two below. His mouth, when closed, simply appears as a crease in the plating of the helm, halfway between his eyes and the bottom of his slightly lengthened chin. When he opens his mouth, the heavily articulated platings of his jaw separate and drop away, revealing abnormally large, sharp, chisel-shaped teeth. When angered, the plates around his mouth reshape into sharp points, giving the impression of an outer layer of black metal fangs behind which his real teeth can be seen, even when his jaw is shut. At his creation, he did not have cheeks or lips, but his want to be able to speak with others led to the unconscious restructuring of his mouth and jaw, allowing him to speak as well as any others.

Personality

Nephilim-01 looks like a black armored killing machine, which, for most intents and purposes, is exactly what he is. At first glance, he seems rather simple in mind, fitting into the image of a stereotypical hulking berserker. However, those who have gotten to know him find that underneath his armored exterior is a mentality that is just as complex as anyone else.

Nephilim is as sturdy in mind as he is in body, a solid and dependable person. For his friends, he is willing to be whatever he can for them, be it a friend, confidant, or bodyguard. He's a bit too tall to offer a shoulder to cry on, but he's more than willing to be a black armored oak tree to lean against.

Nephilim doesn't mince words. He tends to say exactly what is on his mind, when it comes up, and deal with the consequences after. He is slowly learning tact, understanding that sometimes it is better to word things a little differently. Still, when there's an issue he's part of, it's a matter of course that his opinion will be made known in his curious, grammatically perfect dialect.

Physiology

Nephilim's body is mostly human in build, although he is proportionally thinner than a human being. While classified as a 'superstrong' individual, Nephilim's strength is entirely biological, not powered by any such things as magic, strange energies, or mechanical parts. As such, he is weaker than most other 'superstrong' beings, being able to shove around roughly five tons when he really puts his mind to it. However, due to the realistic nature of his strength, it cannot be nullified through the means that others would find themselves weak to.

Nephilim's musculature is inhumanly dense, with a greater number of actomyosin filaments per myofibril, and more myofibrils per muscle cell. His muscle structure is similar to that of a human, as almost every muscle in his body has an analog. His jaw muscles are much larger than those of a normal human, and he is capable of biting clean through solid steel.

His digestive system is where he varies the most from human physiology, as he does not have a normal excretory system. His metabolism is capable of breaking nearly -any- biological compound down into base atoms and molecules, so the only waste products he produces are rendered into simple gases and exhaled during his normal breathing.

Nephilim's senses are all superior to that of humans, save his sense of touch, which is slightly dulled by his Exodermis. His sense of smell is by far his strongest sense, to the point of being not only able to tell what someone's eaten recently, but who they've spent time in close proximity with. He also has the ability to sense demons and demonic taint via scent, even if they exude no detectable aromatics. The ability is hypothesized to be entirely supernatural in origin.

Nephilim is, as described, a purely biological being. His strength and durability are the result of his physiology. However, there are things about him that cannot be explained by his biology.

Nephilim's exodermis is composed entirely of a metallic substance, but is formed in organic growth patterns, much like a mixture between bone and enamel. However, his body has no detectable glands from which his exodermis is extruded. Also, strangely, individual plates of his exodermis can be removed completely, and then fitted back into place as if they were never gone. One theory is that his exodermis is composed of a colony of symbiotic metallic organisms, but even if it were true, there is no explanation for where it finds the mass to regenerate when damaged.

Another of his abilities that seems to defy any plausible explanation is his ability to detect the presence of demonic entities. He is able to accurately determine the position of nearby demons via his sense of smell, regardless of whether the demonic entity in question is shielded from detection via magical means, or even if the entity has no detectable aromatics whatsoever.

Perhaps his strangest ability is the manifestation of an unquantifiable field of energy. This field of energy can be manipulated to form a powerful defensive shield, or as an offensive weapon to strip similar defenses from other individuals, rendering them vulnerable to his primary forms of attack. He is capable of a more brute force manipulation of this field, turning it into a tangible battering ram of energy, but such a use of this ability is taxing for him to perform multiple times in succession. He refers to this overall ability as his "Sword and Shield".

Friends and Acquaintances

For the first year of his stay in Paragon City, Nephilim knew very few people, living in the sewers and becoming somewhat of a boogieman to the Vazhilok presence. Around christmas time in 2007, he finally found his way into the social light, beginning to spend time in Pocket D. As genetically altered as he was, Nephilim is based on human DNA, and humans are social creatures. His gain of friends was slow but steady, as he worked through his original speech impediment in attempts to communicate with others.

Zaerek

Nephilim's first real friend, he and Zaerek met in the Ski Chalet of Pocket D. The enigmatic, fun loving elemental, rude and crude though he be, was one of the first people to look past Neph's armored shell to see that there was a person inside. Either that, or he just didn't care that the shell was there in the first place. Zaerek adds a bit of illogicality to Neph's life, as the only thing about him that can be predicted is that he's completely unpredictable.

Enerix

If Zaerek was Nephilim's first friend, then Scarlet was Nephilim's first enemy. The half-demon was on his 'radar' the moment they were in the same room for the first time, as his sense of smell marked her as a threat immediately. Unfortunately for him, his sense of smell also picked up on her succubus-like pheromones, which he reacted to. Allergically. For a month, his presence around her was constantly announced by his sneezing, as his immune system eventually worked a proper immunity to the toxins in her scent.

Scarlet and Neph are complete opposites of each other, physically and mentally. She is conniving, manipulative, and will use nearly any means to accomplish what she wants, and on top of all is very attractive. Neph, on the other hand, is blunt, direct, unwilling to allow some things to happen, and hideous underneath his Exodermis. In a way, the two compliment each other's strengths and weaknesses perfectly, as many Rikti have discovered, much to their chagrin.

Nephilim, in the long run, can be considered Scarlet's antithesis. Her demonic side's drive to injure and kill is only matched by his own drive to prevent her from succeeding. He was already seriously injured by her once, and is now much more on his guard against her, but their relationship has smoothed out somewhat. He does not consider their relationship to be friendship, but it is deeper than being mere acquaintances. There are very not many people that Nephilim would be willing to depend on in truly dire situations, but as much as it galls him to admit it, Scarlet is one of those people.

Lucy Xiao

Nephilim met Lucy through Zaerek, during a period of time that the two called themselves boyfriend and girlfriend. Despite having a demon trapped inside her body, Nephilim saw Lucy as an unfortunate girl, not a monster, and was willing to be her friend. Their friendship was rocky at points, and they have grown somewhat distant, but he would still be willing to throw himself in the way of some rather massive blows for her.

Lumena

Lumena-05 is Nephilim's sibling in origin. The tiny, slight of build girl was created in the same research facility that Neph came from, and was sent to the Rogue Isles and Paragon City in order to bring him back, alive or dead. Luckily for the both of them, her henceforth exposure to normal society made her realize exactly how sterile her life to that point had been, and the diminutive bioweapon made the decision to abandon her mission and live normally. They have managed to become quiet close, as much as any real brother and sister.

Cassandra Jacobs

Cassie is an unrelated girl who Nephilim found sliding nicely into the role of another younger sister. Literally the Heart of Paragon City, Nephilim sees Cassie as a dear girl who is deserving of all the protection he can muster. He goes about his duties as a Hero with fervor for her, though he feels guilty when a fight ends and he realizes that the holes in the walls are his, not his foes' faults.

Mercy.Killing

Mercy is the first person that Neph really saw as a brother in arms. The gigantic alien is easygoing and fun to be around, and he's the only person who Nephilim can hit the arena with to beat the stuffing out of each other for no reason but the exercise and to laugh about it afterwards.
