Steelo was originally created to feed a desire to play a younger, and often underestimated teenage hero. Despite his age, he's more than proven to his peers(and eventually his enemies) that he's a force to be reckoned with. I was never a fan of the melee powersets in City of Heroes, and trying one out was a result of a great amount of boredom. Interestingly enough, I found myself having fun being at the spearhead of an attack, and being able to wade right into a fight I found, was extremely fun. Since then, I've found myself extremely attached to the character, and the build, and have had a great amount of difficultly playing anything and anyone else. Steelo is influenced by Robin(Tim Drake), Mal Reynolds(FireFly/Serenity) and Kid Flash(Bart Allen).

Personality

Despite having a somewhat troubled past, Steelo has done quite well maintaining a normal sense of being, though oftentimes his sarcasm and cynicism is a front to hide his true feelings. Steelo is confident and self-assured, which is often misconstrued as him being somewhat of an egotist, which his close friends constantly tease him about.

Powers

Regeneration

Steelo's accelerated metabolism allows him to regenerate body tissue at a superhuman rate. He is also able to re-attach any lost limbs by simply reinserting the limb back into its proper place almost instantly without much more than a burning sensation, rather than the excruciating pain that he would have to endure as a normal human.

Super Speed

In addition to regeneration, Steelo's metabolism also allows him to move through space topping out at the speed of sound, which in comparison to other Super Speedsters in Paragon is on the low end while most are closer to the speed of light. Still, Steelo utilizes his super speeed effectively enough in the field against his adversaries.

Weaknesses and Limitations

Despite his ability to regenerate, if Steelo sustains enough damage in one blow, his body cannot repair itself. With that in mind, Steelo still has to be wary to avoid bypassing his body's threshold.

Character History

The Arachnos Invasion

Steelo and his twin sister Gwen
Spoiler warning: Details about a player-created storyline, or information currently unrevealed about a character, follow.

My name is Shane Steelo. I was in born Siren's Call, before Arachnos showed up and made a mess out of everything. Arachnos' presence caused the entire city zone to evacuate, leaving shops and stores abandoned, and the bulk of the residential sector eerily quiet. The only people left were those who had missed the initial evacuation helicopters and those who could not immediately be mobilized and evacuated out of Siren's Call due to medical conditions or physical disability. My mother, who was a Doctor at the local hospital, stayed behind to prepare patients who could not be evacuated from the area immediately. My father, a professor at the University, stayed behind to look after my sister and me.

On the night that my family and I were to finally evacuate Siren's Call on a medical helicopter, Arachnos forces had cut through the Longbow garrison at the docks, and advanced straight through to downtown Sirens; near the hospital. My mother and father stood at the hospital entrance, denying unauthorized entrance to the Wolf spider soldiers. My sister and I watched, as Wolf Spiders shot and murdered our parents.

My twin sister, Gwen and I snuck away and hid in the University library, after having made a quick stop at an abandoned convenience store for food and water. Luckily, patrols seldomly went by the Uni for some odd reason, and we were able to barricade the windows and doors in the event that they did discover us there.

The Freedom Fighters

As time went on, Gwen and I made it a priority to help other survivors like us who had gone into hiding, or had missed the evacuation helicopters, and needed to get to Steel Canyon. Steel Canyon, I should add, was at that point a fairly large obstacle with the University completely cut off and surrounded by Arachnos forces. All things aside, our small group of twelve, consisted of mostly teenagers, made do, and did what we could to survive. Our daily routines consisted of scrounging for food, daily workouts in the University gym, of course tons of reading in the library. We did most anything that would divert our attention away from the carnage happening outside and the possibility of any one of us being on the receiving end.

We did, however, maintain a state of alertness, and though we had hardly any ammunition left for any of our firearms, we did manage to retrieve sturdy blades from the University displays, which we practiced with on a day to day basis. When the day came that we would finally meet an Arachnos face to face, we'd be ready.

We actively researched small unit guerilla tactics in urban environments, and though we couldn't practice our tactics much due to our living situation, we all felt that we were ready to dish out a little bit of revenge.

Gwen mapped out a supply route that went from the docks, to the front line Arachnos forces in Fossburg. We decided to cut the umbilical cord right in the middle, where infantry and artillery support would be the least concentrated. We gathered what intelligence we could on the supply convoy, which consisted of mostly large flatbed trucks, and Arachnobots, supported by a small detachment of Wolf Spider troopers. We went in.

Our initial attack resembled something a little closer to that of brawlers than actual trained warriors. We all tossed aside the weeks of hard training and planning, and went straight for the kill. Our blood was up, and emotions were high. We slashed away wildly at our targets, disregarding all sense of tactical aim or strategic advance. Our enemies had never seen anything like it, nor did they make any attempt to try and fight back at such a wild, and untamed beast. We cut down over half of their numbers, while only losing four of ours. The remainder of the Arachnos unit retreated back toward the sea, and we were free to take what we needed from the supply convoy. At the time, I remember the taste of our first victory, which, back then was what we called it. I think back at it now, and I can't begin to fathom the amount of tactical error we blundered through. I maintain to this day that it was sheer luck that got us through that operation.

After that, we planned each operation with meticulous attention, which surprisingly enough, Gwen had an incredible aptitude for. Suffice to say, all of our operations after that first one were completely flawless, and were executed with deadly precision. We did what our numbers could permit; hitting small supply convoys, patrols, gathered reconnaissance and information we thought might be useful in the future. Gwen took most of her inspiration from books on the Dutch resistance during World War 2.

It was because of our efforts that we were able to help refugees safely reach the Longbow division stationed in Siren's Call and safely enter Paragon City.

"A strange firey feeling..."

So, how'd I learn about my powers? I didn't fall into a vat of toxic waste, or get bitten by some weird, radioactive spider. I also didn't happen upon some grief-ridden, emotional stress moment either. I remember it quite clearly, that while Gwen and I were sorting through a crate we had taken from a recent convoy raid, she noticed that my jacket, a very much used leather button-up had a gaping slash opening right under the armpit. I checked it, and though even the kevlar vest I wore underneath was also slashed through, my skin had remained intact. By that time, our team had seen it's fair share of cuts and bruises, and strangely enough, I had been the only one to make it through with a single scratch, despite the fact that I was easily the most reckless and daring. I knew for certain that I had been hit on more than one occasion, but strangely, each of the areas where there would have been horrific wounds laid only undamaged skin. Despite my refusals, Gwen mentioned that she had read about tissue regeneration in a book she was reading on mutation and genetics, and was eager to see if her twin brother had such a gift, which, after several menial tests, did. It was a strange, firey feeling, after having received a wound. The initial tissue damage still hurt like it ought to, but the speed at which my body regenerated, as Gwen had dubiously called it, was so quick that I hardly ever really felt the pain; Just a startlingly comforting sensation of warmth.

Upon further investigation, my sister and I discovered that I had control of the rate that which my metabolism worked. With enough effort, I could speed it up at a rate that allowed my body's vital systems to repair themselves at over a thousand times the normal rate. In addition, a faster metabolism also allowed my body to move at just under the speed of sound, with enough effort. Not quite on par with the city's famed superspeedsters, but still fast enough to be of some use.

The Siren's Song

As luck would have it, my newfound ability was particularly useful, especially in the eyes of the Longbow, who constantly insisted that I aid them in the front line skirmishes, rather than the more covert operations my sister and the Freedom Fighters underwent. I didn't mind so much, despite my preference to stay with my friends.

After a week-long battle just outside of Buildville, I moved as quickly as I could back to the University, since I was eager to see my sister and my friends again. The image of what was left of the University still haunts me, even now. The smoldering shell of what was left of a once beautiful campus building was reduced to ash and rubble. A Longbow platoon commander approached me shortly after, explaining to me that the Arachnos artillery observers finally caught on to our secret hideout and zeroed in on it, completely leveling the library.

The platoon commander assured me that it was most likely a quick, and painless death for my sister and my friends, which I am glad for, since the pain was long and agonizing for me. I don't recall anything comparing to the anguish I've felt that day.

Without Gwen, and without the Freedom Fighters, I no longer felt that I had anything left to fight for in Siren's Call, and decided that I'd start over in Paragon City. Before my departure, the Longbow Division Commander, Colonel Harmon, recommended that I enlist with the Mutant group Evolution-X and develop my abilities with them as best as I could.

Evolution-X

I immediately went straight to work as soon as I was admitted into Evolution-X. I studied longer and trained harder than most of my peers at the institute driven by the idea of returning to Siren's Call to exact revenge on Arachnos for what they did to my family, and my home. Metal Smith and Attaché, two of the Institute's top officers recognized my exemplary potential and fighting prowess very early on.

As a Cadet, I lead an unauthorized mission on a preemptive strike against Rogue Islands Villain Meridious, who had found his way into King's Row, and was wrecking havoc on the local populace. The team, comprised of Ally Phoenix, Image Kid, Saranella, Toxic Bliss, Amphitrion and Mesmiro engaged the Meridious with fatal results. Though there were no casualties, several members of the team were injured, and there was several thousand dollars worth of property damage wrecked as a result of the battle.

Hours later, we regrouped, and refitted, and eventually cornered Meridious on a cargo vessel sailing back to the Rogue Isles. It was through good teamwork, and solid leadership that we were able to defeat him. For my leadership, I was promoted to the rank of Squad Leader; a position held in high regard by the other cadets.

My abilities were quickly recognized by the Evolution-X Administration, and it wasn't long after my graduation that I was promoted to Lieutenant, alongside fellow graduate Ally Phoenix.

Steelo Today

Ally Phoenix

File:Polaroid3.jpg
A little R&R.

A long-time crush since he arrived at the institute, Ally Phoenix'scharisma and independent spirit were traits that held Steelo in a state of mixed emotions. He wasn't there to socialize, and he certainly didn't have time to waste on fraternization with the opposite sex. Incidentally, Steelo constantly at odds with Ally Phoenix based on the fact that he was constantly paired with her while on assignment. The two became friends gradually after having worked together on a constant basis. It wasn't long after that the two were inseparable and ultimately formed an intimate bond uncharacteristic of most teenagers their age. center‎

The Aces Wild

The Aces Wild

After having departed ways with Evolution-X, Steelo and Ally got in touch with many of their most trusted contacts from their days in Evolution-X to propose the formation of the Aces Wild. The Aces Wild was a group formed with the idea of adventuring and fighting crime on their own terms. It was a chance for them to make their own contribution to the city. The most appealing factor about the Aces, was that with Evo-X, he was part of a team. With the Aces, he was part of a family.

Other Abilities

A dual with Scirocco‎

After having spent countless hours mastering several Japanese and Chinese longsword forms, as well as a few techniques he's invented himself, Steelo has become something of a master swordsman in his own right. Drawing inspiration from several of the books he's read, as well as practical usage against his Arachnos opponents, his mastery of the sword is comparable even to Scirocco himself.

Steelo is an exemplary leader who believes in leading by example. He is most often the first one into a fight, and believes that hesitation and doubt are the two biggest mistakes a leader can make.

Steelo also possesses the rare gift of a photographic memory. After having spent months in the Siren's Call University Library, Steelo retains all the information he's read during that time, and anything else he's ever read. Though many would assume that Steelo is a very "by the book" type, he leads mostly by instinct, and personal observation, rather than playing by the rules.
