OOC Stuff

This is a character idea that had been floating around in my head for some time. I've always wanted to see how a character from the "Real World" would act if they were placed into the "City of Heroes World". I wasn't sure if people would play along or get mad at me for breaking the 4th wall or whatever. So far most people have been pretty understanding, even if they don't believe Emerie's story, and helpful.

I've had more fun RP'ing with Emerie than with any other character I've ever had. You can count on her sticking around for a while.

Personality

Emerie decked out for the holidays.

Emerie is a geeky and outgoing girl who loves to meet new people. Preferring to spend most of her free time in Pocket D she can usually be found there talking to someone or reading a comic book. She's extremely amazed by all the superheroes she now finds herself surrounded by. She doesn't often talk about how she got to Paragon, discovering that most people don't believe her. Instead, she usually just says she's from a far away place that didn't have superheroes. When talking, she sometimes forgets that she's the only person who's from the "Real World" and mentions things such as Dev's, experience bars, and debt. Whenever she does most people just give her an odd look and go find someone else to talk to.

One of Emerie's favorite hobbies is drawing, and when she's by herself she can often be seen doodling or sketching in her notebook. She is a big comic book geek and always carries around a copy of the collected issues of Watchmen, which she often pulls out and re-reads when bored.

Residence

When Emerie first arrived in Paragon City she had no ID or money and so she ended up living in Pocket D. It wasn't too bad, except for the loud music. Now, she has a small apartment in Galaxy City that she shares with Felicity, courtesy of Hephaestus 1.

Character History

Welcome to Paragon

Emerie Waters burst through her house's front door, soaked head to toe and gripping a broken umbrella. A flash of light and boom of thunder shook her house and Emerie squealed and ran up the stairs to her room, nearly knocking her mother over.

"Sorry, mom!" Emerie called, leaving a trail of rain water behind her.

"Be more careful, Emerie. And change out of those wet clothes before you get a cold." her mother yelled after her. Rain battered against the roof of the house.

Emerie closed her bedroom door and stood there, catching her breath. The walls were decorated with posters of Batman, Superman, Rorschach, and Green Lantern. She was a bit of a geek, but she was proud of it. The soaked, 15 year-old girl switched on her computer and changed into dryer clothes. She cracked her knuckles and booted up City of Heroes.

"Time to save Paragon from ultimate destruction." She smiled to herself. A flash of lighting went off outside her window and a split second later came the crack of thunder.

A few minutes later Emerie was too engrossed in clearing a sewer of Vahzilok to notice the weather and fate chose that moment to strike her house with lightning. The lightning traveled down the metal rod Emerie's father had placed on the roof and into the power box which was next to the rod. The electricity surged into Emerie's computer, sending thousands of volts of electricity through her and rendering he unconscious.

Emerie woke up to the feeling of pavement on her face. She opened her eyes to what looked like a sunny summer day. Looking around she watched people walk down the sidewalk, cars travel down the street, and a man soaring through the air. Wait, what?

Emerie rubbed her eyes and looked again. Yep, the man was definitely flying.

"What the-? Am I dead?" Emerie thought as she stood up and turned around. In front of her was a large flight stairs, leading to a plaza where a number of costumed people were gathered around a woman. Mouth agape Emerie looked up and locked eyes with the statue of Atlas.

"No....way....I'm in Paragon City..."

Good Luck and Godspeed

Emerie paced in front of the steps leading to Atlas Plaza. Thoughts flew around her head like mobile homes in a tornado. What had happened? Was she dead and this was the afterlife, or was she in a coma and dreaming all this? So many possibilities.

"Okay, okay. The first thing to do in the game is go see your first contact. I need a way to get home, so maybe I can talk to someone at DATA and they can get Portal Corp. to let me use their big machine to go home. If this is a different universe, that is." She took off for City Hall, slowing down to gaze at the different heroes who were goofing off under Atlas.

"At least that's the same. Heroes hanging out when there's a city to save." She thought and hurried off to DATA.

"The villains will have control of Recluse's Victory if we can't get some more heroes in there. Ugh, what is it with this city? There's always something going wrong!" muttered the scientist looking at the Recluse's Victory display. He didn't notice Emerie until she tapped him on the shoulder.

"Ah! Who-what?" He yelped and looked down at Emerie. "What are you doing in here, miss? And why're you sneaking around?"

"I need your help. I have to get to Portal Corp."

The scientist smiled and nodded. "Oh, you do? Look, kid, take your little game somewhere else. I'm very busy recording this...well, you probably wouldn't understand."

"That's the Recluse's Victory monitor. The blue areas represent the parts of the city currently controlled by heroes and the red are for villains. It's a different timestream where Arachnos managed to take control of Atlas Park." Emerie said, reciting what she remembered from when she was behind the keyboard.

"That's...right. How do you know that?" The scientist blinked. "Are you a hero?"

"No, but I used to play one. I think I'm from a different universe and all this is a computer game. I should know about Recluse's Victory, I played the game a lot. I've got to get to Portal Corp. so that they can send me back home." Emerie said and sighed. She had a feeling she'd be explaining that many more times to come before she left.
Emerie explains how she arrived in Paragon.

"That's...well, I guess it's possible, considering the nature of the multiverse, but I've never heard of that universe." the man bit his lip. "I don't feel right about doing this, you're just a child, but civilians aren't allowed to use portal technology. I'm going to have to give you a hero license, and you're going to have to reach Security Level 50."

Emerie frowned. "Oh, I didn't think about that. I guess I can do it. I managed to get a few characters to 50 before. I never thought I'd have to do it myself, though."

The scientist nodded. "Be as careful as you can. I don't want your death on my hands. Take this to the city representative in the main room and she'll set you up as a hero." He walked over to his desk and rifled through some papers before pulling out a blank hero license. Emerie accepted it and began to leave.

"Miss?" Emerie turned around as the man called to her. "Good luck, and godspeed."

Emerie had to stifle her laughter at the corny line as she walked away. She couldn't tell if something so corny was a good omen or a bad one.

Getting an Education

It all started when Emerie mentioned that she didn't go to school. This comment set off a series of arguments and discussions about Emerie's education, with it being resolved that when the semester started after Christmas Emerie would have to begin some kind of school. The general opinion was that Hephaestus 1 would be Emerie's teacher.

While discussing the curriculum with Heph Emerie mentioned that she didn't have a legal guardian. Open mouth, insert foot. Cue the next arguments. Heph was more than willing to become Emerie's guardian and teacher until Mobius Knight stepped in and offered to do it instead. The two men fought about who was more qualified until Emerie settled it by choosing Mobius, who made a promise to get her home as soon as possible. Emerie had become Mobius Knight's ward and trainee.

Death and Decision

Emerie and Mobius Knight sat in Pocket D one night, discussing the plausibility of Emerie taking a transdimensional communication device when she returned home. It was decided that it would be unwise. If anyone found out Emerie would likely be interrogated for the rest of her life, and interdimensional travel could become possible in her world, which could lead the Rikti, or another threat, to it. It seemed that Em's only choices were completely cutting off her new friends when she returned home, or staying in Paragon.

Em hadn't made the decision until the apparent death of Mobius Knight the next day. After a battle at the source of fate, where Mobius battled a madman and sacrificed himself to protect the universe, Emerie, along with Terra Skye, was returned to Paragon. Emerie had Mobius' scarf to remember him but the grief she suffered at the loss of such a close friend settled the decision.

Realizing that cutting off herself off from her friends would be the same as them dying, and not wanting to suffer the way she had been suffering since Mobius' death, Emerie told Terra that she wouldn't be returning home. She was staying in Paragon.

Josh and Kyle

A few weeks after the loss of Kyle Emerie met Josh Parker in Pocket D. Despite the boy being a little shy and nervous Emerie soon found herself with a crush on him. Taking Felicity's advice Emerie told him and found out that he felt the same about her. They started dating then and there.

Just a few days after that Emerie was talking to Terra and Felicity when Terra was suddenly overcome with a strong urge to go the boardwalk in Talos Island. The three hurried over and soon found themselves face-to-face with Kyle, back from the dead and now significantly less serious than he had been. Emerie's family was whole once again.

Promise

In Josh and Emerie's relationship there were a few things Josh wasn't eager to discuss, such as his past, and Emerie was fine with this. She was content to wait until he was ready. She couldn't have expected what the truth would be, though. In Pocket D one night Josh broke down and told Emerie everything. He was just a physical manifestation of the thoughts of a psychic in a coma, he didn't believe he was real. Emerie protested, arguing that he was real, even if he hadn't been born and that it didn't matter to her. She promised that they would find a way to make Josh "real".

Unfortunately, just after he seemed to calm down Josh disappeared right in front of Emerie. According to Mobius Knight, the psychic must have woken up. Emerie hurriedly ran off to find the man and get Josh back; she had to keep her promise.

She learned that the psychic's name is Parsons and he is of the very powerful variety of psychics. While discussing this with Terra Skye and Zyflix in Pocket D Parsons showed up and started picking at their minds. Emerie confronted him, and the two held a psychic conversation. Unfortunately, Emerie was made to forget everything they had discussed.

While discussing the state of affairs with Terra, Kyle, Felicity, Zyflix, and Cobalt Claymore in Pocket D, Parsons once again intruded into Emerie's mind. He told Em to watch something "humorous" and proceeded to make Terra insult her fiancee, Kyle. After a fight nearly broke out Em and Claymore managed to calm things down, but Parsons made Em forget he was the one who caused the trouble. Luckily, Kyle couldn't be made to forget and he told Em. Emerie came up with a plan.

She, Kyle, and Terra had to be separated and remain that way until the trouble with Parsons was settled. Terra and Pan Masters decided to use the time to take a vacation to Las Vegas, and Kyle went off to do who-knows-what. Next, Em instructed Felicity to be her memory, in case Parsons made her forget things again. For now, Fel carries around a notebook and records everything Emerie says and does after she gives a sign, signaling that Parsons is in her head. Only the two know about this, so as to prevent it from getting back to Parsons.

Finally, the fail safe. In case Parsons messed with Emerie's mind to make her believe she should help him Felcity has been instructed to report any actions that even hint at a liking towards Parsons to Kyle. He has a note, from Emerie, which he is to read only when Fel tells him to, that orders him to tie up Emerie and keep her under lock and key until she's back to normal.

After acquiring a spell that would rid Parsons of his psychic abilities and learning his location, thanks to Mobius Knight, Em rescued Josh and the pair fought Parsons. During the fight Em cast the spell and Parsons lost his abilities. However, he continued trying to access them, which caused his brain to basically shut down. He is now in a coma, and even if he wakes up it's said he will have severe brain damage. Emerie feels awful about what she did to Parsons, but tries not to show it in front of her friends, so that it won't appear like she can't handle the Hero life.

And as for Josh, after the battle he and Em were leaving the building hand-in-hand, but as soon as they passed through the door he disappeared again, much to Emerie's sorrow, only to reappear a few days later, apparently totally real now.

Adoption

Finally deciding to make it official, Emerie was adopted by Kyle and Terra the week before their wedding. Since Terra wouldn't be taking the Masters name after the wedding, Emerie decided to take both of her new parents' names. Officially, she's now Emerie Kylie Waters-Masters-Skye. Kyle doesn't seem to be a fan of the name.

Hunted and Cursed

Mobius Knight had heard rumors of threats on his, Terra's, and Emerie's lives. After some investigation it turned out the list was much larger, dealing with almost everyone the group knew. To be safe, Emerie, Felicity, and Josh moved in with Terra, Kyle, and Pan Masters.
Emerie at the peak of her transformation.

At about the same time, Emerie found herself cursed by her Praetorian double. The girl cast a spell on Emerie, and glowing runes appeared on her arms. Shortly after Emerie began a transformation. At first her ears became pointed, almost like an elf's, then her skin began to pale and her hair turned a dark shade of pink. Small spikes of bone have also begun protruding from her shoulders. Eventually Emerie was returned to normal through the help of a man named Kade, although there's still no sign of Emerie's Praetorian double.

Soon afterwards, Kyle discovered that the person hunting them was an aspect of fate, none too pleased with Kyle's previous experiences with altering it. Kyle, along with a contact, created a plan to destroy the hunter, and Emerie went along. Kyle's contact mislead the group, and caused them to do several illegal things to help Kyle. After the battle, where Kyle destroyed the aspect, Emerie and Terra turned themselves in to the police.

Dr. Philo

After Emerie and Terra were released, Emerie got a visit from her social worker, Mr. Donner. The man informed her that, as a result of her illegal actions, Terra and Kyle had been determined unfit parents, and she was now back up for adoption. After hearing the news her parents were, of course, enraged.

Unfortunately, very little information could be found on the person who was actively trying to adopt Emerie, or why Donner was going to great lengths to make it happen. After several weeks of fruitless investigation, Emerie disappeared. Kyle traced her necklace, but found it in a garbage dump in Kings Row, among several bodies, all children. Fortunately, Emerie was not among them.

Investigation revealed that all the bodies belonged to children who had been adopted by the same man who had tried to adopt Emerie. Also, all the children were dimensional immigrants, like Em. Kyle and Terra interrogated Donner, who revealed that the man was a Dr. Philo, and that he must've gotten impatient waiting to adopt her, and had decided instead to kidnap Emerie.

Terra and Kyle hurried to the location of Philo's lab, given to them by Donner, and battled through his security, discovering the man's journals along the way. Reading them, they discovered the man was obviously insane, and had developed a scheme after being dismissed from Portal Corp. He intended to open a portal to dimensions he felt he could conquer, by using the children's dimensional signatures. However, none survived long enough, and Emerie was already being hooked up to the machine.

Fortunately, the parents saved Em, but not before she was badly hurt. She spent the next few days recovering in the hospital, and Philo was sent to jail, although he was very nearly killed. The mental trauma Emerie suffered, being kidnapped, and tortured both psychologically and physically, at Philo's hands has left her scarred. Although she was very reluctant to admit it, Emerie told Kyle that she's now "afraid of everything and everyone", believing that everyone is just waiting for a chance to send her back to the doctor.

Kyle is making Emerie see a psychologist to get over the trauma, and it seems she is making some progress to getting over it, although it's not a fast process.
